I have no one to help me with college, since I'm the first in my family ever to graduate. And I was wondering...

What's the difference between undergraduate and graduate schools? Which one do you apply to when you've just graduated from High School?

Oh, and another question. Is the University of Southern California (USC) or UCLA a good school to go to if I want to become a dermatologist?

I realize my questions might seem a little naive, so I apologize beforehand. The fact of the matter is, I have no idea about colleges.

Thanks. (:

undergrad i s what you apply to when you graduate from high school. grad school refers to masters or doctorate programs, and you need to have had graduated from an undergrad program.

and i have no idea about cali schools. you might want to look at their websites or college review books

yep, you graduate from undergraduate school and get your bachelors.

USC is a good school; UCLA is a good school. For dermatology, you'll have to go to professional school, so your undergraduate is not as important.

Ah, thank you so much for that. I had a feeling it'd be that way, but I wasn't sure. ^^ Thank you!

So, if I want to become a dermatologist...later on in life, it doesn't matter what undergraduate school I go to, right? It's the graduate school that determines all that, am I correct?

I'm not sure if you need medical school to specialize in dermatology, but it's highly recommended, if not a premed requirement, that you take biology, chemistry, and all the other pre-med courses

it would probably help to go to a prestigious undergrad school to get into a good graduate school

i wouldnt say going to a prestigious undergrad is going to help you a lot more than going to a regular undergrad. Almost all of the younger dentists, orthodontists, opthlamologists etc in my area in nyc went to a public college, SUNYS or CUNY's and then went to pretigious grad schools and residencies. Just like the regular college process going to that better hs might not necessarily help you get to that better college because you're also competing with people from your own school.
