so i have Verizon DSL at home and i use the modem they supplied me with. which is a westell 327w which has a built in wireless thing.
the problem.
when ever my sister is home, she's always downloading something via clubbox and i cant do anything when she's doing that. is there a way to limit the amount of connection speed her laptop gets? and is there a way to put a password on the modem so that only the people who know the password can use it?i have another router that i've had forawhile. its from U.S. robotics. if i set that up would it be any help? and how would i set that up considering my modem has 4 ports for diffrent computers and a wireless antenna. i hate not being able to do anything when she comes home and starts downloding.. grrr. help pleasee..

It is probably ur modem.
Here is something that might help
Intermittent loss of Internet connection
An intermittent loss of your connection to the Internet is often caused by electronic or physical interference.
* Cordless phones and other electronic devices are the most common cause of intermittent Internet connectivity issues. Cordless phone systems running at 2.4 GHz often run at the same frequency as your DSL modem or home networking router. If you are experiencing intermittent connectivity issues, you may need to replace your cordless phone with one that runs at a different frequency.

* Large metal objects and electrical equipment such as televisions, home entertainment electronics, and microwaves can also cause interference. Try to keep your DSL modem and wireless home networking router away from these sources of electronic interference.
* Check with your neighbor. You may both be running wireless networks at the same frequency. The solution may be as easy as changing the channel of your wireless router.
* Physical obstructions such as walls, floors, home entertainment electronics, appliances, and furniture can cause interference if the wireless signals have to pass through them. Move your DSL modem or wireless home networking router to another location so it isn't in the line-of-sight of these potential interference factors.

* Your phone jack may be defective or damaged. Try connecting the modem to a different phone jack, if possible. If the hiss and background noise is gone, the initial phone jack is defective and should be replaced.

* The RJ-11 phone cord that connects your modem to the phone jack may be damaged and need replacing. If your phone cord is over 14 feet long, the signal may be weakened sufficiently that it is intermittently lost.
* DSL filters are needed on all phone devices except the DSL modem. If you have more than one phone line entering your home, DSL filters should also be installed on the second line, even if it is not connected to your DSL equipment.

* The inside phone wiring in your home may also cause intermittent loss of the DSL signal. Shorts, grounds, poor line quality, etc. can degrade the DSL signal.
I hope this helps...

I have the same services are u do DSL, and the same modem....
if u want to privatize it go to http://192.168.1.1/
u need to login first
if u have never log in than it is most likely admin and admin or admin and password. I suggest u chage the password and sign in name. Cause if that is ur password and id, then any one can sign in and alter ur thing. reply if u would like to know how to change the password and id.
As for privitzing ur wireless thing, after u sign in u go to configuation then wireless. ur will see some stuff. Here is what u put in.
Wireless Operation: enable
Network Name (SSID): pick a name or u can just leave the code/ digits
U scroll down to privacy setting
Authentication Type : Share key or open system, pick one, I have it as share
WEP Security: enable
Key Select: key 1
Key 1: I was told to change the 64 bit to 128 bit.
in the blank area for key 1
u either type in an exact 13 letter password or a 24 hex sumthing I forget
when u type in ur 13 letters or 24 hex copy and paste the password in notepad and save it. U might want to print it out just in case.
U don't need to worry about key 2-4
now scroll down and click on save.
ur wireless network should be private. u might want to check on it.

Assuming you setup the wireless security correctly, and I encourage you to.
It is the best to convince your sister to run a program like Net Limiter. To limit her download speeds. The best way to not go nuts is to let her have ALL the bandwith at night or say from the time you sleep until she gets home then kick in Netlimiter to slow down her downloads.
blindboi's method is the BEST but will require $$ and hardware which I think is unreasonable.

Yeah my way is the best and it is reasonable, because once you have admin status to your router you can run something called Quality Of Service(QOS) which you can limit bandwidth to any computer with out somebody noticing and there are tons of other feature which are great.

Personally I don't understand why everyone likes the WTF54GS routers... Their range even with the modded firmware weren't as impressive and was overall clunky to me. Although compared to many other routers it was more stable.
Oh and its redundant to have a wireless router built into the modem and get another router... =\ I say software fix for the win.

i agree with blindboi, even with a built in wireless from the modem...you can secure the network without any "security" and secure it by MAC address...this way your sis will see the network but she wouldn't be able to connect...kinda mean but hey...if she jacks with YOUR internet then yea...lol. another way is to set the Access Restrictions from the router linksys has a pretty good one. Also, before you log into your router/modem, make sure you are on DHCP (dynamic IP) cause if you're on static it will not let you in the router. (most isp's don't give you static...mine does for cheap haha...only avaliable in texas though) so you should be in the clear...but if you are on static make sure you save the ip/gateway/subnet mask/and DNS numbers.
oh ps. Linksys makes great products..since they're cisco but their tech support for linksys sucks.
