Story:
Stargazer is based on a young Earth Alliance Officer, Sven Cal Bayan, a 19-year old natural, part of Phantom Pain and Selene McGriff, a 28 year old Coordinator part of the GSX-401FW Stargazer project, a part of DSSD.
DSSD stands for Deep Space Survey and Development, which is focused on the research of space beyond the orbits of Mars. They consist of the Earth Alliance, ORB, and ZAFT, with the Alliance and ZAFT holding majority power, and keeps their neutrality (since this was during a time of peace after the events of Gundam Seed). The principle was to exclude all their prejudices and research in the name of humanity to the far reaches of space.
Phantom Pain is a private military commanded by Logos. Their existance is secret even within the Earth Alliance. They are also given special prviledges beyond the normal soldiers, allowing them to do what they please as long as Logos is in favour. Phantom Pain also uses the restricted technologies marked by the Junius Seven treaty, allowing them to use Nuclear-powered weapons, Mirage Colloid, and Phase Shift warships.

Natural-Aligned:
Phantom Pain - Also known as the 81st Independant Mobile Battalion. Members include: Neo Lornnoke, Stellar Louissier, Sting Oakley, Auel Neider, and Sven Cal Bayan. They are under direct command of Logos, but otherwise can do as much as they please. They also use restricted technologies banned from the end of the last war (in Seed) like Nuclear-Powered Mobile Suits, Mirage Colloid and Phase Shift Battleships and others.
Personality: They are the private army of Logos and are under their command. Many of their soldiers harbour deep hatred for Coordinators, such as Sven Cal Bayan.
Neutral:

Background: A coordinator, born and raised in space. Her parents are members of DSSD as well.
Personality: She strongly believes that mankind should relocate to space. She is very stubborn and won't stop until she achieves her wants. She is willing to put in great effort to see that these means are met.

Background: Former Earth Alliance Tank Platoon Commander, Lieutenant Commander. Retired after the CE71 war. His sister who was a DSSD engineer was killed in the war, orphaning her 14-Year Old Son, Ryuune L'ange, a first generation Coordinator. He is stationed at DSSD's Technology Development Center in the outskirts of Fortaleza, South America.
Personality: Holds resentment against many rivals he fought during his role as a commander. Despite this he was a kind person with a strong sense of responsibility, as he offered to take up guardianship of his nephew, Ryuun.

Background: Orphaned at a young age due to an incident, later he joined Phantom and moved up to be an elite Coordinator extermination unit, and in a platoon with 2-3 people.
Personality: Harbors a strong hate for Coordinators (maybe due to the incident where he was orphaned). Shows little emotion and is a fighting machine.

Background: Forms a 3 man-platoon with Sven and Mudie (Strike Noir and Blu Duel's Pilot). He was orphaned while he was very young.
Personality: Shams is a cynic and always views the worse of the situation. Appearantly his glasses are just for show. He is an all-rounder fighter, but pilots the long-range specialist, Verde Buster.

Rank: 2nd Lieutenant of 81st Independant Mobile Battalion (Phantom Pain)
Allegiance: Earth Alliance
Background: Forms a 3 man-platoon with Sven and Shams (Strike Noir and Verde Buster's Pilot). Orphaned very young and underwent anti-Coordinator warfare training as a soldier.
Personality: She's tense, but doesn't allow the real side of her to be shown. She is unable to understand sentiments to other people or to herself. She is merciless in battle and excels in Close-Combat.

Background: A mobile suit designed specifically for exploration beyond Mars. This is a non-combat mobile suit that uses a propulsion system known as Voiture Lumiere (Delta Astray also uses this technology) and it is allowed to be ummaned due to it's high degree of autonomy. It's operation support system spells out the acronym "Guider UNmanned Deployment Autonomic Manipulation" or G.U.N.D.A.M.
