idk why, but there seems to be a lot of ppl in the class of '06 at my school who are doing that. they probably contacted the college they plan on going to because i see _____ college c/o '11 like on facebook/aim profiles/myspace etc and i know they js graduated.

I think people take a year off for many different reasons. Personally though, i wouldn't consider it, unless i'm doing something very productive within that year. I don't want to be a year older than i really need to be when i graduate. Plus, i think when you go right into college, you're more paced. I know a few who took a year off and they seem to be lost when they went back to school
absence makes the heart grow fonder

the '11 thing could also be because they're in a 5 year program of they want to double major. lots of people take 5 years to graduate.
anyways, hmm. i personally wouldn't want to take a year off unless you got some really good experience, i.e. peace corps or something volunteer-esque. or of course, unless you need to work to pay for college. thats a responsible decision as well.
also, remember that (most likely) it will be more difficult to get good letters of recs when you haven't worked in an academic setting for a year.
