sleep paralysis is a COMMON sleeping disorder, a lotttt of people have them.
it is a literally what you said. your brain becomes conscious before your body responds.
sleep paralysis happens normally right as your about to wake up, or right as your about to fall asleep.
it is nothing to be freaked out about! you don't die from it. nothing bad happens, there is no cure.
your body is paralysed because during REM sleep, everyones body is paralysed. thats just how it works... and people "hallucinate" sometimes because the cycle which your body is paralysed is when you dream. the paralysis is often associated with fear because people just panic.
i started to get it when i was around 12-13... some people get it often, some people don't.
for me, the sleeping disorder gradually became worse from when i was 13-17. at 17 my little episodes became from hearing a buzzing, to seeing images, to seeing and hearing fully as if everything was happening in real life.
so of course the last time it happened i freaked out... i was under extreme stress at the time.
i looked it up online and found that its more common to happen if you sleep on your back...rather than your side. and its triggered by stress.
so from then on if i'm stressed out i make sure i sleep on my side.
and heres my little trick. in order to get myself out of the paralysis (which always feels as if the paralysis is getting "deeper" and feels if i don't struggle i will never get out of it) i bite my tongue.
not so hard to get blood or anything. but i bite down on my tongue so to give me a little pain and i can break out of it easily. sorta like pinching yourself to get awake =P try that next time!
sorry to say that there is no cure... its just a sleeping disorder. like sleep walking
oh btw! in chinese its when a "ghost squashes you" literally pushing you down so you cant get up lol. but its bullocks to me =]

i get it every couple of months....i hate it. my boyfriend told me that koreans say it's a ghost sitting on you, which really freaked me out. And then (true story apparently) a girl i know has a friend in korea who was sleeped paralyzed and when she opened her eyes there was a demon lying beside her with it's face like RIGHT up in her face. she wasn't/isn't christian but heard that saying the lord's prayer makes them go away, but since she wasn't christian it didn't work and the ghost started mocking her and saying it back to her. and then she passed out and when she woke up it was gone.
haha sorry long post and scary if you believe it, but i just pray and it works
AHH this story scared the living daylights out of me. Thank goodness I have a habit of sleeping on my sides rather than on my back.

Sleep paralysis occurs because during the REM cycle of your sleep, your body is paralyzed. The REM cycle is when you dream. Sometimes, you wake up and your body is still paralyzed.
My pyschology teacher suggests going back to sleep for a few minutes and try to wake up again.
Although I've never had sleep paralysis, it's not uncommon.
Gooood luck <3.

When you get sleep paralysis your mind also hallucinates. [Yes!! Hallucination is real kids! =D] So you either hallucinate visually or sound..... sometimes both.
For me I get only sound... last time this guy was laughing at me [kind of echoing sound]. And I felt this huge force on top of me.... and I couldn't move, say, or do anything. How freaky... it can be cool sometimes but my heart starts beating so fast cuz... of course it's scary experience.
I can stop it now though.... right before I get it I start hearing sounds... indicating it's about to begin... at that point i still have some sort of control over my body so I just jolt up.. then I'm fine...
If you can recognise when it's about to begin then you should be able to prevent it... I think. =)

i'll come back later. but i feel the need to share my part first. i've had sleep paralysis SEVERAL (maybe 4-5?) times since this year.. always when i've had little sleep. i thought it happened only when i was on my back, but on 2-3 occasions it did happen while i was sleeping on my side. i hate it because i can feel my nerves being tingly (like when your foot falls asleep) on the side that i'm not sleeping on. it always happens about 10 minutes after i fell asleep, and after a short dream. i think these dreams are usually bad.
the first time i was very freaked out, especially because i read about it before, and because i associated it with the whole scissor-lock thing. i woke up and experienced the paralysis after a dream in which i was in a car on some dark, demented road with my dad and another person who caused us to crash, killing my dad. ooortunately, my grandmother was in the same room at the time. i told her about the dream and started crying, because it seemed REALLY bad at the time. then i told her about the paralysis but i don't think she got it.
i don't think this is a spiritual sort of thing, because i've researched it and read that it has to do with your brain and the function that keeps your body still during dreams being shut off late, or something.
edit: okay, i just read everything else and for the people who feel it's spiritual and get ghosts/demons.. they could possibly be two entirely different things?

it first started when i woke up from a bad dream of the ring girl crawling on top of me staring at me in the face, when i woke up i couldnt move, couldnt breath, couldnt speak... it was freaking me out
chinese culture call this "gue ya chuan", which means a ghost on top of u. @_@ scary
but when it happen to me, my head is perfectly clear but the problem is that i couldnt breath! it feels like that i forgot how to breath. and i had to struggle really hard to get air back into my system... but another problem... i couldnt move!!1 aiya it happen to me really often too!! what is this problemmmmm
my aunt said it's the nerve in ur necck getting pressed on causing the unable to breath and move-ness T.T bbut idk...

And the thing is that it always seems to go hand-in-hand with a nightmare.
So basically, I freak out everytime it happens. I read somewhere that moving
your toes first would release this, but I found that never worked for me.
Maia-X3! I also get sound hallucinations. It is the MOST scariest thing I've
ever experienced in my sleep. I couldn't even explain how it sounded exactly,
but it'd be repetitive and start from a distance but slowly creep closer and closer
till it sounded like it was right beside my ears. Very freaky stuff!
