I've only had this happen to me a couple of times, the first surprised me. But the second time around I just waited it out. Figured that my body didn't wake up yet so I didn't think too much of it.

A terrible and extremely scary experience. Although I found out that the best cure for it is to stop being PARANOID. The more you think of it, the more likely it is going to happen to you. Think of happy stuff, daydream, and fall asleep to that. I had sleep paralysis a year or so ago so trust me on this one smile.gif

Doooood, I had sleep paralysis (i think) last night WHEN I read about it on soompi a few hours before going to sleep damnit! Well this time was different though... I was lying on my back with my hands folded.. I was pretty much awake but starting to fall asleep, then I hear screaming (not deathly screaming, more like screams @ an amusement park) on the left side of my head? So I don't have control of my body at this point and I try to move my fingers but nothing works. I have no clue why but my mind wandered off to the memory of me riding the Top Dragster at Cedar Point and thinking "why the hell did I ride that?" After a little I have complete control of my body now... sleep paralysis is some scary stuff o__o

I'm on the same page. It happens to me all the time. I'm alert during that time as well but because I am so sleepy I just shake myself out of it and go back to sleep and eventually it'll either go away or come right back. At one point, it happened literally all night (estimated 10 times?) and I got so annoyed but I was too tired to do anything about it >_____<;; My friend suggested that you should wake yourself up (no matter how hard it will be), do something (ex: computer, read a book, etc) and fall back asleep instead of going right back to sleep. But I'm so tired that, that's not the first thing that comes to my mind. Good idea to consider though.

Spectacular.

I get this quite often when I'm sleeping in my house in Singapore.
Now that I'm abroad, it doesn't happen.
Initially, I thought it was just cause of stress, etc.
But when I go back for a short trip, the same thing happens.
So I guess it's the problem with the room and me, not due to other factors. :x

Didn't read most of the posts (cause it's 33 pages. ^^; )
But the first time it happened to me, I was very very freaked out!
I saw something black coming out of me or "floating" around but it's like smoke or something, not something visible.
Managed to open my eyes but could not move my body or every scream.
I felt breathless at the same time. This was the only time that I could open my eyes.

The other times, my body just froze and I had to mentally "wake" or remind myself that this is not real.
After a while, it'll go away and I'll sleep elsewhere but my room.
It just always happens in the same room.

Not sure if this has been mentioned, but sometimes, I kinda know it's going to happen, I'll try to wake up or move my hands or legs before it.

Oh, this happened to me too.
But whatever it is always get ready to move your arm.
When this happens, I usually move my arm because it's the easiest to move.
& when it moves, my body instantly wakes up. :]

The first time this happened to me, I got really scared.
I remember I tried calling for my mom but my mouth couldn't move.

This happened to me twice. The first time i could move my jaw a little and soi forced my jaw then and i got my body back. Second time my left arm was shaking from me trying to move it and after a little while i finally woke up from it. ): Quite scary. I wasn't even asleep at the time. :/

Oh, I never knew this had a name...
I don't know if mine is considered sleep paralysis.
But I tend to have a lot of nightmares, I rarely dream too.
But I can't wake up through the nightmares, I have to stay asleep until the end...
Like, but my mind is telling me that I need to get up.

I don't remember if I replied to this thread before since I don't post here often but I watched show on the Discovery Channel about this once and it could be certain fluids in your body going into your brain when you sleep on your back. I use to get it a lot but after that, I stopped sleeping on my back AND started using a sleeping mask and it hasn't happened since. I also find that when I think about sleep paralysis before I sleep, it always ends up happening to me so try not to think about it.

I think part of it is psychological fear and I know the mask will prevent me from being able to see at night (I use to not be able to shut my eyes when it happens and see moving shadows all over my room).

Edit -- oh I sleep on my back now because my sleeping mask prevents me from getting scared. It's too comfortable of a position to give up. wink.gif

Ehh, I used to get this cause I was sleeping on my back. Now I sleep on my sides and it doesn' t happen anymore. Only when I somehow end up on my back again I get it... Annoying, really. When I try to move, there's even more screaming, prodding and ringing of a bell... xD

From what I can remember, this happened me thrice only. I have a tv in front of my bed, and I was freaking out 'cause I could see myself when it happened. I didn't see anything scary, but there was a feeling of paranoia that someone was coming, and something bad's gonna happen.

It even happened to me when I was sleeping beside my mom. There was a blackout, and so it was dark, but I could see my mom, and I desperately wanted to wake her up because I thought someone was about to come into the room. Before I "woke up" or the paralysis, I had a dream, and the person I was expecting to come in was already going up the stairs holding a candle.

this always happened to me last year!

i tried opening my eyes, but my eye kept like closing and opening, like it couldn't keep open..but that's because i tried forcing myself to move... i was so scared.. i wanted to scream..i just wished that my mom or sister or dad could pass by and just shake me awake or something... but then..you just can't move! D:<

I don't think that's true. Well it doesn't apply to me anyway. >_<

I get this quite a lot because I have odd sleeping patterns and I've been lacking sleep lately. I used to be really freaked out but now I'm used to it (as strange as it sounds). To "move" again I usually concentrate really hard on moving one body part, if that doesn't work I "sing" in my head. Like when you have a song stuck in your head, I sing in my head and that usually "wakes" my body up.
