The service is free but you'll need a wireless router for DS play online. If you don't own a wireless router then this is the way to go, I use it and works great.

I plan on heading out to Sears in NJ, which is the only store near NYC where the DS Lite is currently available. I had to call them up before doing so. But they are not taking orders for it online or even for in store pick up, so I'll have to drive over there. But those interested can check at this site for available DS Lite systems.

According to Japanese Nintendo website the battery life of DS Lite is as follows...

DS Lite:

Lowest brightness: 15-19 hours
Medium Low brightness: 10-15 hours
Medium brightness: 7-11 hours
Highest brightness: 5-8 hours
Charge time: 3 hours

DS Heavy:

Standard brightness: 6-10 hours (brightness comparable to "lowest" on DS Lite)
Charge time: 4 hours
