So... out of the three original starter Pokemon...
... which do you choose?!?
Bulbasaur (Grass)

Squirtle (Water)

Charmander (Fire)

(State reason, if possible.)
My personal listFavorite: Squirtle
Not only is he the Epitome of Love (<3), but he rocked early through mid game.
Also, I loved water-types... not sure why. All of his moves kicked major ass, and he learned them fairly frequently. He's cute as hell, too. ;]
Second choice: Bulbasaur
Great for early game... but a little bit bland, in my opinion.
Some of his moves were pretty good, but I never really used his other moves.
He did learn them frequently, though. And of course, he evolved faster than Squirtle and Charmander.
Third choice: Charmander
... cheeky bastard. (OK, don't know where that came from.)
I just hate Charmander. ;[
His moves, in my opinion, really sucked except for maybe Ember (for early game) and Flamethrower (but he learns it WAY too late). Horrible choice for early game.
For all good moves, Pokemon usually learn them late. The powerhouses that learn Hyper Beam, fighting Pokemon that learn Cross Chop, etc. If you want Charmander to learn Flamethrower early, either obtain the TM for Flamethrower (at the game corner) or don't let it evolve, it'll learn Flamethrower faster. Unless you're talking about the old Pokemon games. Then you're screwed. Once it's a Charizard it's all worth it though. Mine's like level 86 at the moment? I got in a trade from a friend when it was a level 21 Charmeleon. Once it's a Charizard, it'll have kickass Special Attack for a fire type Pokemon, and being a half Flying type gives it some advantages over Ground types. I'm basing this on FireRed/LeafGreen though. Recommended for veteran pros/those that don't have a problem with their Charmander/Charmeleon getting owned by Brock and Misty early game.
Squirtle is the standard type. I started my LeafGreen with it, and it's a nice strong Blastoise. Give it Surf when it's a Blastoise and you've got yourself a real powerhouse. He takes down Dragon Pokemon very easily with Ice Beam, so a good choice. There's a huge selection of water Pokemon in the games though, Blastoise's strength lies in its Defense and Special Defense. I'd rather use a Sharpedo or Gyarados for their offensive abilities. Recommended for experienced amateur players.
I never liked Bulbasaur much. In fact, I still don't have it or any of its evolved forms in my Pokedex in my GBA games. Solarbeam isn't worth waiting 2 turns, and Sunny Day is a waste of a move slot. Still, there's a shortage of good grass types in the game (Victreebel, Vileplume and Bellosom are the only other good ones but they still have problems with some stats such as Speed or Defense with the exception of the other 2 grass starters in Pokemon games.) Bulbasaur is still a good choice for starters, since Vine Whip owns Brock and Misty pretty well early game, but if you wanna be on top late game, you'll have to spend a good amount of time raising a strong team equally. Recommended for new players/those that would like to get through the first few badges quickly.
Yeah, I'm the Pokemon video game nerd lol. I wouldn't pick any of those as the best starters, if I had a choice with the other 6 starters, I'd choice Totodile or Torchic.
