I'm in a 7 yr med program. Not at UMDNJ though. Anyways. I TOTALLY recommend it. Even though I have to take the MCAT [required] the med school technically already has accepted me. happy.gif

And seeing how difficult the MCAT is and how much stress so many people are over getting into med school, I have WAY less stress. By knowing I'm already guaranteed admission, it's like a HUGE weight off your shoulders.

Northwestern has a 7 year med program (HPME)...that's probably the one since most of those programs are 8 years.
Basically when you're applying as an undergrad you fill you an extra application that means you're choosing to apply to the medical school there as well. It's reaaaally selective TT__TT

^ I don't know about dental - I know UPenn has a BA/MD dental program (or would that be BA/DMD?), but it's 8 years. I guess the UMDNJ (is that with TCNJ?) also includes dental since the medical school does.

As for the 2nd question - Yes, it basically means that after high school, you're accepted into both a college and the affiliated med school. It requires extra application material, interviews - it is very selective, so you should only go for it if you're absolutely sure you want to be a doctor. You do get a big weight off your shoulders since you won't need to apply to med school again, but you do lose out on the chance to look at a range of med schools after college.

So you're guaranteed a place in med school just by applying to a 7yr med program? huh.gif

I'm at UIC.

Basically you can just research colleges to see which one has it.

I also got in at Boston University, but decided to go with UIC since they gave me a full ride for my undergrad years.

In answer to some questions, basically it's all included in applying to the college. Usually there will be interviews, ones with the undergrad and also the med school. For UIC I had a panel interview for the med school portion, and there were 2nd interviews as well. For BU, I had 1 undergrad interview and 2 separate med school interviews [they weren't panel ones though]. I also interviewed at IIT, but I think they cancelled their program.

You usually find out about these programs when you normally find out about when you get into colleges, so late March/May. Then you have to respond whether you accept or not.

My friend is in HPME [I didn't apply for that one, decided I didn't like NW at the time. Lol..] and she doesn't need to take the MCATs, which is excellent. Their GPA requirement to remain the program is a lot lower too. 3.2/4.0 v. 3.5/4.0 at UIC.

I still have to take the MCATs and score at least a 30. If I don't get a 30, I may have to take a summer program with the med school the summer before I go to med school, but I'll still be in. They'll also review my grades and GPA before deciding that.

And yes, you are basically guaranteed a spot in their medical school as long as you meet their requirements. Requirements, like I already showed, is different from school to school.

And no, it doesn't take away from which med schools you can apply to. At UIC, we're allowed to apply out if you want to other med schools, but you'll still be guaranteed a spot at their med school. Most people don't apply out though, UIC is actually located at a great place in the city and is cheap for a med school, and still has great facilities for that "price."

wow interesting, I was so worried that I would be rejected from all the med schools after studying for 8 years (when I'm 28? 29?).
Question though, if I apply in high school, what if I decide to change majors when I'm in college? Like what if all of a sudden I discover that medicine is not for me? Will I be kicked out of the school or what?

And 7 years means that I'll be studying medicine my first year in college right? Or does it mean 7 years after undergrad graduation?

Again, it depends on the program. For UIC's GPPA program, you can change out if you want, it doesn't matter what major you want to do. As long as you fulfill the program requirements.

For 7 yrs it means TOTAL undergrad + med school. So 3 yrs undergrad, 4 yrs med school. Although a lot of schools will let you do 4 years of undergrad if you want.
