Don't they give you a list? If not, you can find lists in places like Linen n' Things or Bed Bath & Beyond. Most incoming freshman make the mistake of buying/bringing too much stuff that they don't really need. Most dorm rooms I know are itty bitty, so things can get cluttered pretty fast. I'd first bring the basics with you.. Bedding, toiliteries, clothes, etc. After you get settled, make a list of stuff that you forgot or need to get. That is, if you are able to go home often. Here is a basic checklist of what you might think of bringing, but you definetly do not need all the things on this list. If you're living/rooming with another person, it would be a good idea to split bringing things that you both might share, such as the trashcan, shower curtain, rug etc.

Biggest Tip of all: PACK LIGHT!!

You'll be sure to return home with even More stuff.

My big advice is to bring as little distractions as possible. When I really wanted to focus on my studies, I got rid of my TV. In college.. ugh, let me tell ya, there are days where you spend hours upon hours just watching TV. Not because it is particularly good shows, but because you just seem to procrastinate until you realize that it is too late.

Usually it is a TV, and like a domino effect, that'd mean your video games and DVD player would be gone as well.

DO NOT bring musical instruments you either:
* don't intend on playing that often [it takes up a lot of room --;;]
* cannot play that well -- unless you're completely devoted to it. my roommate had brought her guitar with her, and besides the fact that she only played it when the mood struck, she wasn't the best and ended up annoying the whole floor.

also, go easy on the clothing. you end up wearing half of what you bring xP

don't come super early in the morning. i think that's what everyone does to "beat the traffic." what's the rush to move in anyway? lol. bring a mini fridge or rent one. meal points system at sd suck. don't bring a tv for your room. it's a huge distraction. one for the common room should be enough. don't forget your shower slippers hahah that's gross. bring board games =) they're fun. and if you don't live that far from sd and you plan on going home more than just during the breaks, make life easier on yourself and don't try to bring 3 carloads. when you move in, bring the necessities...and whenever you go home, bring some more stuff, so that your first day isn't like BAM and you have to spend the whole time unpacking.

welcome to ucsd =) you'll love it.

^^ You'll love it cause there is alot of asian girls. Only reason I would go. xP
When I first went to school. I took a bag of clothes, backpack, and laptop. Since I lived in a hotel my first semester, I really didn't need anything else.

i'm a junior in college...but first time in dorm...well...more like an apartment~

here's things i'm gonna bring..hope it helps first-time dorm people~

-what to bring-

Bedding
1. bed in a bag - most colleges have XL twin size bed
2. funky pillows for design/comfort~

Bathroom
1. tooth brush
2. tooth paste
3. towels, such as hand towels, bath towels, etc.
4. soap, with soap dish
5. shampoo
6. shaving kit
7. brush (or comb)
8. shower curtains and rings (only for apt people)
9. bath rug

Clothes
1. clothes, depending on location. also, if it's a totally different town from where you live...
think about the style/fashion...it can be different. best to shop clothes there.
2. shoes, gonna bring all styles. also keep in mind that there might be semi formals in college....similar to prom. so...ladies, bring evening gowns. and for the guys, bring suits/tux.
3. laundry detergent
4. laundry basket

Studies
1. laptop/desktop
2. printer with lots of paper
3. plain paper (for notes)
4. lots of pens/pencils
5. staplers
6. tape

Food
1. mini refrigerator (for apt people...they probable have one)
2. microwave (optional, depending on person) also, for apt people...they probable have one
3. snacks and drinks (also, optional)

Entertainment
1. TV (depending on dorm regulations)
2. Ipod/mp3 player/CD player
3. reading books/magazines
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
-What not to bring-
1. musical instruments (agree with x라면, but it depends...some colleges do not allow amplified instruments, but allow regular instruments) check with the school if you really want to bring one.
2. drugs/alcohol/illegal products (kinda stupid, but was on list from my bro's college)
3. stun guns/pepperspray (depending on what state your school is, i'm gonna bring pepperspray 'cus my school's in a city. so check with the school for those items)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

-Tips-
1. during the moving-in day, make sure that you have the right number of your dorm/apt.
this happened once to my brother, and we had to remove everything out and go to the right one
2. also, if your school is in the city (with high crimes), please keep in mind that there are lots of act of burglary during the moving-in days.
3. most of all, have fun~!!!
