I built my computer for the first time and it's actually working pretty well! I thought I was going to break things or have things not work. Good thing I paid close attention to all the manuals and such.
Almost everything is perfect, except for the usb 2.0 not being recognized.

This means that anything that tries to connect to my computer through USB is not working, including me camera... *sigh* It's driving me nuts!

I have the Asus a8n5x motherboard and I've been doing a little research on how to fix this problem, but to no avail...

Anybody know what I should do? Do i need to give you guys more information to help solve this problem?

You need to install your motherboard drivers (aka chipset drivers). ftp://dlsvr03.asus.com/pub/ASUS/misc/util...INXP32_V665.zip

thanks dark!
I did install it but unfortunately it only updated the drivers for ethernet, IDE, SATA, and SMBus... and the USB still does not work.

I went to the asus website and the download manager is pretty confusing, not to mention not sure what things I have to download.

I'm still not able to connect my camera via usb. Is there anything else?

Sorry to be so annoying, this problem is irritating me like none other.

hmm... that should of taken cared of it. Are you trying to plug it into the front connectors or the back connectors? Cuz if it's in the front, make sure the cable that connects the USB ports on the front of your case is actually plugged into the motherboard. If you're trying to use the USB ports in the back, are they the ones directly ON the motherboard? Or are they USB ports that are on a cardless PCI-slot bracket and then plug the cable to the motherboard?

Just for testing purposes (if you're not already doing it), use the USB ports that are behind your computer that are directly soldered on the motherboard. It should be those USB ports that are next to your keyboard/mouse ports. Verify if they work or not.

Last resort... official nForce4 reference drivers. http://www.nvidia.com/object/nforce_nf4_winxp2k_6.53

I've tried both USB ports, the one's in the front of my computer and the ones that are attached to the mobo in the back.

I know that both of these work because I could plug my usb mouse into any USB slot and it tracks it right away.

Problem is that even after downloading the chipset drivers, it STILL doesn't work! Am I missing something here? Because I feel like I've exhausted all my ideas. By any chance is there a way I could do it manually or through regedit or something? These driver downloads are not working for me.

XP service pack 1?
SP1 is needed to get the USB 2.0 working nicely.
Other than that, try other usb ports. I used to have the top 2 usb as 2.0, bottom 2 as 1.1. Front had 2 2.0s and 2 1.1s stupid yeah but thats how they made "legacy" support.

Check your plug and play service and make sure it's actually running. That's the only thing I can think of that'll explain why your mouse works but nothing else works.

Start > Settings > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services. Go down to "Plug and Play" and see if the status of the service is "Started". If it is then DAMMIT... I'm at a loss for the time being. tongue.gif But if it isn't, then right-click it then Start it. Also right-click it then goto Properties. Then set the "startup type" to automatic so it'll run everytime windows is running.

yup~ It's "started"

Man... This is driving me crazy.
I can't figure out why my USB isn't working.

I downloaded the sp2 and am up to date with the windows updates, I'm sure the usb works because my mouse works when I plug them in to any usb port, and I downloaded both drivers dark suggested I download.

I really don't know what else to do...
Is there something in the BIOS that turns the USB 2.0 on? I'm pretty sure it;s a problem with my mobo...

Thanks for all your input though!

Are you connecting each of your devices DIRECTLY into the USB ports or are you actually plugging a USB hub into the port then plugging your non-working devices into the USB hub instead?

As far as the BIOS, in the USB Configuration you want to Enable all three options (USB controller, usb 2.0 controller and USB Legacy Support). And you also want to set in the BIOS Plug & Play OS to "YES".

And just so we know... on the motherboard support CD that came inside the box, you did run it and clicked the option to install the USB 2.0 Driver, right?

I would go back to Asus's website and flash the BIOS to the latest version, then go back into the BIOS and re-setup all the settings again afterwards.

I'm connecting my camera straight through without a usb hub.

Just in case, I reinstalled all the drivers and utilities from the ASUS mobo cd. To install the USB 2.0 it opens a text box saying that it doesn't need to install it because SP1 or later would automatically do it for me... Yup... still a problem...

And what do you mean by flashing the BIOS to the latest version?
How do you do that? I've been told the BIOS is the nervous system of the computer so I'm not sure I want to mess with that unless if have very specific instructions...

Still lost.

look in your manual. There's a section that shows you how to update your BIOS. You basically either download some files onto a floppy disk then run it to flash your BIOS... or you can simply use that one program on your support CD that allows you to connect to ASUS and then flash your BIOS from within Windows (much more convienant).

You can read more about the upgrade procedure here. http://support.asus.com/technicaldocuments...SLanguage=en-us You should make note of the BIOS version you have and see if it's the latest version first. Here's a C&P of the latest versions of your BIOS.

Version 0902 2006/03/24 update

Description A8N5X BIOS version 0902
1- Fixed RIS failed with NV onboard LAN due to IRQ conflict.
2- Fixed system hangs on POST while installing some PCI-E x16 VGA cards.
3- Update AWDFLASH to V1.17 [apparently AWDFLASH is what you can use to flash your BIOS if you don't do it from within windows with the program from your support CD]

Version 0602 2006/02/17 update

Description A8N5X BIOS version 0602
1- Fix sometimes asusupdate will show Unknown flash.
2- Update awdflash to v1.16 to avoid the system BIOS being downgraded
3- Add an option in the Bios to Enable/Disable "Wake up from S1/S3/S4".
4- Fixed FSB always shows 800MHz in AI-Booster
5- Fix sometimes USB 2.0 flash can't be detected while pressing reset button in the OS. <--- whatever that means.

Flashing your BIOS isn't that hard and it normally isn't problematic. However... while it's flashing your BIOS (which normally takes less than 1 min), if it is interrupted in any way (because of a blackout, your computer crashes... etc) then your motherboard is toast cuz your computer needs a good working BIOS to even turn on in the first place. So eventhough over 95% of the time nothing bad will ever happen, the possibility still exists that you could have extremely bad luck and have a power outage during that critical 1 minute when you're flashing your BIOS.

Here's a silly question for you. You did reinstall the drivers for your camera and also all the other non-functioning USB devices right? And did you also set the BIOS properly with those settings I mentioned in my earlier post?

Did you install any motherboard drivers with USB drivers along the way? I know my DFI used to have drivers which were designed for pre XP sp1 and if I were to install those drivers, my board would only provide USB 1.1 support... uninstall the usb drivers/root hubs restart... and 2.0 came back.

Did you check the BIOS and enable the front USB ports on the mother board?

Lolz I had this problem a while back and I'm not if this is the same problem since the solution was fairly simple for me. I searched on google. ^^ Anyways are you sure the USB is enabled? Like you know when you start your computer click del to go to the BIOS and then enable your usb ports. Same thing happened to my scanner and I thought it was the scanner or the software problem but it was the USB being unenabled. I don't know if it's the same to you. In a way it doesn't sound like it since you seem to know so much of computer. >_<
