Hey guys, I'm looking for some speakers for my laptop. I'm not looking for anything small and portable as its got built-in speakers – I just want the speakers for home use, and nice sound when I plug the computer via S-video cable to my TV (note s-video doesn't transmit sound). The problem arises as laptops (at least mine, and all the ones I've seen) don't have sound cards with the 4 or so ports that a good surround sound speaker set requires. I assume the speakers I need to get will work through a USB port? Or, is there some sort of USB intermediary contraption that will let me plug in surround sound speakers through it (such as http://www.futureshop.ca/catalog/proddetai...amp;catid=23833?

Thanks everyone!

edit: link hopefully works now smile.gif

I believe some laptops do have surround sound compatible cards built in now. And if you don't, you can add a card via the PCMCIA slot. I haven't looked much into it before, but the only one I can think off of the top of my head is the Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS Notebook. Your link doesn't work by the way..

I have one of these, and I am unable to plug my 7.1 system into my laptop/desktop with old sound card.

i use the Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS Notebook and i think it works well, i got it at a good deal ( i love you ebay =0) ). i can hook up my 5.1 speakers to them.

how much are you looking to spend for a sound system? I use the Logitech x-530, and i think they are great for the price i paid ($70 at frys) for a 5.1 system.

Hi everyone, thank you for responding. I found the PCMCIA slot on my computer. As for the price range, I'm hoping the speakers and usb/pcmcia card come out to less than 150 CDN, under 100 would be nicer. Considering the speakers I'm looking at cost ~70+tax something at or under 50ish would be great.

Yowzatheman : I'm thinking of the exact same speakers as the ones you have (my link should work), good to hear you like them; my roomate also got the exact same ones and I thought they were good.

If possble I'd like to make use of my PCMCIA slot. I've already got so many things connected by usb – the wires are everywhere! tongue.gif

Thanks for the link Guess001. Right now I'm mostly occupied with something for my laptop that would let me use speakers such as those. Anyone know of PCMCIA cards that allow for surround sound, and have enough speaker ports for all the speakers to be connected?
Thanks guys!

Logitech X530s. that's probably the best bang for the buck ^___^
I have them myself, with a laptop, but I just need to go get a Audigy ZS notebook sound card~ =___=

The PCMCIA card for that is the Audigy2 ZS notebook version? don't know the exact name >__<

Thanks Little Chris. I just have one (kinda major) concern with the sound card/PCMCIA thing. If we look at the picture:
IPB Image
You only notice 2 ports for audio jacks, 1 headhpone and another one I'm not sure. In the middle theresanother thing that doesn't quite look like USB. So if I have speakers with surround sound, how would I plug them into this contraption?

Thanks!

it has another connector that has three inputs, I think. if you look around for pictures.. for example at newegg, you'll see that the middle port connects to your speakers through another cable.
