Yes, if you want to go, you have to pay for SPOP.
BUT, you do have the option not to go. ;] (And trust me, not everyone goes. AND, it's not necessary. Just go to academic advising. But it's supposed to be fun... so whee? =\)

Wow prices for SPOP and Mini-SPOP went up -__- But yes, you need to pay (online).
I went to Mini-SPOP because my mom felt that SPOP would be a waste of time and money. All my friends who went to SPOP had A BLAST. The only difference between SPOP and Mini-SPOP is funness. haha
At Mini-SPOP, the only socializing that happens is when we get into little groups with SPOP staffers and play stupid icebreakers. Then I went to academic advising (within one's school), which was REALLY helpful for me. The counselor talked about the various majors within the school, and also about UC/UCI course requirements. After that we went to a computer lab. I forgot what that was for, but I remember that they handed out lots of informative papers, including the change of major form, which allows you to change majors without any prerequisites.
I would go to Mini-SPOP at the very least, because the academic advising is very helpful. It's better to be safe than sorry, right? You don't want to be the clueless one once registration/the quarter starts.

They have academic advising sessions separate from SPOP and Mini-SPOP.
You don't need to pay for academic advising. They provide it during the summer... assuming that you've declared a major.

I think the "best" one is Princeton court. But it's difficult to get a hold of...

um. yes.
What are the differences between the different Courts anyway? They all seem to have the same # of bedrooms/bathrooms for the same price.

The Courts are a bunch of off-campus apartments owned by The Irvine Company. They're VERY close to the UCI campus, some near University Center and some on Campus Dr. near the Albertson's plaza. They are small and expensive x_X

LOL. Distance. And quality of the rooms and such. I talked to a lot of people who resided in different courts and they all agreed that Princeton's was the best- clean, big, perfect distance from everywhere... which of course makes it the most desirable so it's the jewel of the mine.

if you go to orientation (spop or mini-spop) over the summer, they give you all the information you need to know about your major and help you pick out classes. for bio sci majors, most freshmen take bio 93. you can check ratemyprofessors.com for good professors and what not.

Your first quarter, 12 units (3 classes) will suffice. But once you adjust to the workload, you should start taking 16 units (4 classes)
What writing class are you taking? (Humanities Core, Writing 39, Writing 37)
For bio sci, check out the '06-'07 General Catalogue. I found the specific bio sci pages for you, but you need to get the '07-'08 one once you come to UCI
