I'm seriously LOVING Transnational Gangs right now. It's a really laid back class - this quarter is 3 quizzes [all T/F!], no midterm, no final, no paper to write. It's all based on a bit of reading and lectures. Professor Valdez is testing out the new e-lecture programs for UCI, so we haven't had an in-class lecture for almost 2 weeks. He's also often traveling, so class gets canceled. A lot of the test material is based off of in-class lecture / e-lecture material, and he'll go over similar material in each lecture, but makes it interesting each time. As a professor, he'll definitely keep you engaged. My former RA hosted a small program where he gave us a quick lecture last year, and it definitely sparked my interest. She pretty much recommended any class that he taught.

However, if you're not a fan of professors cussing, speaking really informally, or are easily disturbed by violent images, then the class isn't for you.

OH, and if you don't have an early enrollment window, it might be hard to get in. I had a relatively early one [for a freshman at least XD] and was still on the waiting list. Our class right now requires an overflow classroom for our quizzes because there's no room otherwise.

I'm taking Ling 3 now, and I love it actually. To each their own, I guess. xD Haha I think it's really interesting and fun, and pretty easy (you get to use all your notes AND the textbook on all quizzes/tests). You don't even really have to go to lecture because she posts the Powerpoints online, but I go anyway.

I know someone taking EAsian 110 now, and he seriously has to read like an entire new book every few days. He's pulled many all-nighters because of that class. But if you think you can keep up, go ahead!

And EAsian 116 and 190, I'd like to know too, because I might be taking one or both of them next quarter as well!
I am studying abroad in Korea for 2 semesters!
Read about it here (WordPress) or here (Tumblr).

Has anyone taken one of these classes listed below? Would you recommend any of them?

I am kind of at a loss for what to take next quarter. I thought I would be taking Econ 100B and just one elective but due to scheduling conflicts, I only have 10 units that I am taking for sure. I'm a 2nd year Business Econ major and probably going to minor in East Asian Studies. I need to pick 1~2 classes so that I can take 14~18 units. ^^;;

Classes I am taking for sure:
Econ 15B (Probability and Statistics in Economics)
Soc Sci H1G (Social Science Core) - this is the reason I am not taking Econ 100B next quarter ;_;

Classes I am wondering about:
Studio Art 20 Basic Drawing (This will fulfill my category IX requirement, so I am really curious about it...)
Biological Science 9B Biology and Chemistry of Food and Cooking
Linguistics 3 Introduction to Linguistics
International Studies 13 Global Economy
International Studies 130 Transnational Gangs
International Studies 179: International Relations of East Asia
International Studies 179: Political Economy of Japan
Economics 152A Economic Anthropology
Anthropology 139: Music of Japan
History 21B World History
History 172D Age of the Samurai
History 170F: East Asia Since 1895
History 172F Postwar Japan
Art History 42B History of Asian Art
East Asian Studies 55: Japan: From Early Modern to Ultra Modern
East Asian Studies 110: Gender and Modern Chinese Literature
East Asian Studies 116: Christianity in Modern Korea
East Asian Studies 190: When Tokyo was Edo

Thanks in advance to anyone who has advice ^^

I'm taking history 21A right now and am planning on taking 21b next quarter. Though I can't really say for 21b, 21a isn't really that bad. You just have to make sure you keep up with the readings really well, as discussions are mandatory. It's the first history class I've taken at UCI, so I don't know if all history classes are like this, but for tests, we've got in-class essays and identification questions. We also have a couple fairly easy papers to write outside of class. Anyway, I like history in college because it's not just about memorizing a bunch of names and dates.

Anyway, yeah, I'd recommend reading up on the professors on ratemyprofessors.com because that can give you a lot of insight on the classes they teach as well.

Studio Art 20: I don't think you'll be able to get into that, so choose something else instead. Or at least have several back-up plans if you choose to try to add that class.
Linguistics 3: Stay farrrr away. Worst class I've ever taken.

For music of Japan, I don't think being a fan of contemporary Japanese music alone will be enough to make you interested in the class. My experience with classes like that is that they advertise themselves as being something a casual fan of the culture's music would enjoy, but then turn out to be overly-detailed surveys of the country's entire musical history.

Ohh I failed to notice the majors only sleep.gif;;
Anyway, I actually was more interested in traditional music~ >.<;;
But for that class I'm a little worried that the class will be really intense... ;;;

Wow open note AND open book?
What's your professor's name?
Maybe I'll consider taking that class if it's the same professor this quarter *_*

What the hell? What professor do you have?
When I took Ling 3 it made my life a living hell. I can't believe I actually passed that class. The professor was rude. The TA's did nothing to help. Everyone was lost except the kiss-asses who sat in the front and laughed at the prof's jokes every day.

I've taken Art History 42C last year and it was generally easy. Just go to lecture and memorize the paintings/drawings/art pieces and know the meaning behind them. I find art history somewhat interesting so it wasn't a bad class for me. I also know people taking an art history class this quarter and it sounds like the same thing as the art history class I took last year, so I think 42B will be about the same. I don't know about grading though; it probably depends on your TA so try to pick a good TA?

I'm going to take Writing 39C next quarter and I heard there's the option of choosing the 'poetry' theme one? anyone have any info/opinions on that class and if it's easier to take than the other 39C option?

Writing 39C is a pain. A PAIN. I cannot express this enough, haha. But yes, it's incredibly hard to get into poetry or creative writing classes to fulfill that requirement so most people just take 39C. If you have to take it, just take it and do the work. You'll feel really good when it's over smile.gif

Whatttt? No way, I had her, too! She was horrible!
When the girl next to me dropped her pencil and I bent down to pick it up, the girl thanked me and Griffith yelled at us in front of the whole class for talking.

^ Yeah, put yourself on the waiting list. Chem classes (and bio classes) tend to have people drop out all the time, especially within the first week or so. Just make sure you have at least 12 units in your schedule so that you're a full-time student.
