Good luck in establishing your residency..
I had to go through that...and it was a pain in the arse.
They first said that in order to be considered a 'resident' you have to have at least 2 years of school in the state, which i did..but they wanted more paperwork.
I had to get copies of my employment history for the past year
and my bank account history for the past year (well not all my bank statements but i needed a copy of the paper that i signed when I opened a bank account in the state of wa with the date on it..)
I don't think your parents being a resident of the state automatically makes you a resident..but I could be wrong.
Good luck!!!

It does. Once your parents become citizens and you're under 18 or something you automatically gain citizenship too. I think the same applies for residency, but only if you're under 18?? LoL! Not too sure.

And also..my parents aren't residents of the state so maybe that's why all the headache.
-edit-
This came directly from the UW website.
A student whose parents or court appointed legal guardians do not reside in Washington must show establishment of a bona fide domicile in the State of Washington. The student must also provide documentation showing independent payment of the majority of their expenses for the previous calendar/tax year and independent payment of, or the ability to independently pay, the majority of their expenses for the calendar/tax year of the application.
Students who are financially dependent upon parents or legal guardians (provide court documentation verifying the guardianship is still valid) must show that their parents/legal guardians have established a bona fide domicile in the State of Washington. The student must also provide documentation to show that they are a financial dependent claimed by the parents/legal guardians on the most recent U.S. Federal Income Tax return.
Students whose parents or legal guardians (provide court documentation verifing the guardianship is still valid) are either divorced or legally separated may be classified as residents if the following conditions are met:
1. The student is claimed as a dependent on the most recent U.S. Federal Income Tax return by one or both of the parents/legal guardians,
2. At least one parent or legal guardian has established a bona fide domicile in the State of Washington.
To establish domicile in the State of Washington you must provide documentation showing you meet the following guidelines:
1. Prove conclusively that you have not come to the state primarily for educational purposes. Current guidelines require that a student enrolled for 7 credits or more a quarter must be employed at least 30 hours per week at a non-student job to overcome the presumption of educational purposes.
2. Live in the state for 12 consecutive months as a legal resident. A legal resident is an individual who has relinquished all valid legal ties (for example, driver's license, voter registration, et cetera) with their former state of residence and established such ties in Washington in accordance with state and local legislation.
3. Establish ties:
1. Employment.
2. Driver's license/state ID. If you have a current out-of-state driver's license, you must obtain a Washington State Driver's License# within 30 days of arrival. If you don't have a driver's license from any state you must obtain a Washington State Identification Card.
3. Vehicle registration. If you own or drive a vehicle in Washington, you must register it in Washington#.
4. Voter registration. If you have a current out-of-state voter's registration, you must register to vote in Washington#.
5. Establish a bank account in Washington.
6. Medical/automobile insurance independent of parents.
7. Financially independent for the current and prior calendar years.
Examples of other factors that might help one establish proof of domicile include: disposition of property in the former state of residence, relocation of household members, participation in local community organizations, and generally becoming involved in activities that will help prove their intent to make Washington their official place of residence.

Monday: Math 307
Tuesday: Chem 142
Wednesday: Psych 101
So, here's my advice for the incoming freshmen, never combine those classes (mine for example) together; you will die. Psych and chem don't bond very well.

i'll most likely go to uw..if i get accepted to usc, i'd probably ponder about it for a couple minutes, and then decide that uw would be a better fit for me... lol
anyway, how are the dorms there?
my sister recommends that i dorm at least the first, if not, two years, just so that i'm connected with the school and the people.
i'm considering two other options...either commuting from federal way (exit 147 ish..so it's not too bad. they'll be a bus straight to uw from where i would potentially stay), or living in an apartment with my friends...
i'm leaning toward dorming but i dunno. I don't really know if i'd like sharing bathrooms and having such a smalll room.. however the fast internet connection does appeal to me..lol.
my sister said that the south campus has newer dorms, but is also more crowded...and she said that i should probably be on south campus since i'm going to take science classes...
So basically my question is, how are the dorms? Pros? Cons?
Princeston Review calls UW dorms : "Dorms like Dungeons..." lol

i would DEFINITELY recommend dorming for ATLEAST your first year, especially the dorms like mcmahon, haggett (although that place is awful) or mccarty. terry, lander, or mercer just seem so far away from campus. i live in mcmahon and i love the clusters and i love the fact that i am so close to everything. dorming also provides you with a great way to meet so many people and make new friends. i dunno, i feel like if i were to commute i wouldn't have made as many friends. the cons..let's see..the food gets so old and there really isn't a lot of good stuff to eat, but it's not something that i would make a big deal about. when you choose your dining levels, just pick basic so then you can spend the extra money on the food you actually WANT to eat. umm..another con, some people are really inconsiderate and loud during the most awful times and calling the RA (resident advisers) doesn't really help because it's like he/she doesn't do anything.
anyways..i hope that helps. if you have any questions, i just ask!!
