Anyone ever read the manga/watch the anime of this awesome work?

I just had it recommended to me and finished it off in 2 days (it's 18 volumes long!).
Its rights have also recently been bought by New Line Cinema to be made into a movie (some info about that at imdb.com).

It's a thriller about a Japanese doctor, Dr. Tenma Kenji, practicing in Germany. He is one of the most skilled brain surgeons, and therefore, an incident occurs where his schedule is changed from performing surgery on a commoner (who was first in line) to operating on a famous opera singer, for purely political reasons on the hospital's part. As a result, the commoner dies.

He is wrought with guilt, and the second time this happens, he chooses to operate on a young boy instead of the city's mayor. The boy had been shot in the head during what appears to be a robbery gone wrong; his parents were shot and killed, and while his twin sister walked away with no physical harm, she has fallen into a great state of shock. The boy lives while the mayor dies. The hospital loses prestige and Tenma loses practically everything (his promotion, his fiance, his reputation).

Then mysteriously two things happen simultaneously: the three heads of the hospital are murdered through poisoned candy and the twins disappear.

The story really starts nine years later when a series of similar murders begin to occur in Germany.

And Tenma faces great horror when he realizes that saving the young boy nine years prior has turned out to be the greatest mistake of his life...

He had saved the life of a great "monster."

wow, i didn't think anyone would make a thread on this. i'm actually watching the anime, which is 76 episodes so it's gonna be awhile before i finish. i did read the 1st volume of the manga though. it is pretty damn good though.

i wanted to watch this anime since i heard great comments/ratings from it, but then i dont feel like dling 76 eps

youtube is no good for me either. guess i have to buy the dvd some day

Thinking of finishing it one day. I watched the beginning of it but stopped somewhere before episode 10 because I wanted to finish watching other stuff. Will watch the rest someday when I'm ready.
