yeah, i think i need to record my lectures... does anyone else record theirs? what kind of tape recorder do you have? how far away or how close do you have to sit to record the professor's voice? i was thinking of looking for those small/mini tape recorders (not the full size cassette tapes) but i don't know how well they work..

Last year, I specifically bought a voice recorder for one class in particular. The professor droned on and on and went by so fast that I thought I would need it.. badly. Well, it turns out that even though I had it and recorded lectures.. I'd never listen to it because I'm normally very impatient. I felt that it was a waste of time to just sit there and listen to a lecture (one you've already heard) for over an hour. I'd tell myself that I'd do it later but I'd just forget about it and reassure myself that it was unnecessary. It's a bad thing to do and I realize that. Recorders definitely help but you need to have motivation and patience but otherwise, save your money until you know that you really need it.

Mine was a digital voice recorder with a limited amount of memory (about 4-5 hours of medium quality). I'd recommend that or one you can save on your computer because tape recorders seem to be a hassle. Not to mention I haven't seen one around in awhile. I made the mistake of sitting in the middle of the room and left the recorder on my desk. It picked up a lot of annoying sounds (chairs squeaking, people coughing, papers rustling). So if you do end up using it, sit very close to the front or leave it on a table close to the professor's.

I'm using one! I have a Sony digital recorder. That way I can hook it up to my comp and save the lecture. Simple biggrin.gif

I used to use them. I think they're useful if you really don't mind sifting through all the lectures a second time. Now I just use my voice recorder to record myself singing...even thought I'm terrible at singing xD.

I'm thinking about getting one because I tend to day dream but I'm not sure if I'll ever use it. I have one from 6 years ago but its broken and I doubt it'll even record anymore. Know where I can get one for under $30?

a lot of professors at my school don't allow students to use tape recorders during lecture,
which means painful and frequent hand cramps for everyone :]

i don't know if my professors allow students to record lectures actually... i think a small digital recorder won't be noticed by the professor...

i'm taking organic chemistry 2 this fall and i do have a habit of daydreaming and last spring when i took organic chem 1, i missed a lot of info...

My dad bought me a Sony digital voice recorder last year and I honestly didn't use it much because I felt I learned better paying attention to the lecturer/prof and making notes at the time.

A lot of people chose to record the lectures though, and they usually placed their recorders right up on stage where it's best to record only the prof and not external noises. At my school, the profs tell us upfront if we're allowed to record lectures or not (all my classes allowed it) so we didn't have to ask, but if yours doesn't, then you should ask beforehand.

I think it's a good investment if you have the time and patience to listen to it after the lecture. I've been debating whether I should buy one for that reason. I daydream so much in class, it's really sad.

I've used it for several of my big lecture classes, with 200+ students. We put ours on the stage or on a table on the stage and get it back after class. Sometimes when other students are talking during the lecture, I can't hear what the professor is saying/explaining even if I'm sitting up front or away from the students that are talking so it's nice to be able to have a recording of it.

it is useful but sometimes i don't have time to go through it. but it's good when you can't attend class and have someone record it for you. i did it once and i thought it was useful *** not that i suggest everyone to do it *** if you're extremely bz and have dr. appointment then it's fine smile.gif not a good tool to skip class people.

and plus, some professors dont even allow it.

I've used a digital voice recorder. It's the best for classes where the prof has a heavy accent that takes time to understand or a difficult class where you need to think more and listen.

By recording it you can go through and rewind and all that. And you can go at your own pace. smile.gif

My english book has a "study tips" section and it says not to use tape recorders because it gives you flexibility and that if you have the flexibility, there's like a 90% chance you won't go through with it and you're just wasting your time pretending to study.
