Hello! My name's Jennifer, and about to be a senior. I've taken private lessons in art since the middle of freshman year, and am currently in AP Studio Art. I'm planning on pursuing art in college and I needed some help from more advanced college art students in regards to the portfolio.
Enough of the introductions. In a nutshell, I'm freaking out right now because I have nothing for my portfolio currently. Or so my teacher says. I couldn't do much for my portfolio this summer because I went to the RISD Pre-COllege for six weeks, and I expected to do a lot of things that could be included in my porftolio, but we started with the basics because my major was architecture and many from my class did not have a drawing background. So from my classes, I have only have a mere couple i could include. And there's a couple that i feel like i could include, but my teacher disagrees. Which brings me to the question, what exactly should be in a portfolio, and what shouldn't? Is there a specific criteria? What do colleges like and look for??
Please, enlighten me, for I am on the brink of insanity after hearing that I have to begin my portfolio from scratch.
THANK YOU!!
Oh! and colleges I'm applying to are:
RISD
UCI, UCSD, UCLA, UCBerkeley
Cornell
NYU
Cooper Union
SAIC
Pratt
Oh! and while we're at it, if anyone knows good art schools that also has good academics, please post them too!
THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!

Omg, I wanted to apply to this really cool art school in Chicago, the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.. I don't have a portfolio for it anyway!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Do the websites for those colleges have the requirements for the portfolio. I think they should.
I have a book on the school in Chicago if you are interested. It's the one they sent me and lists the majors and other info. I don't have any use for it so I can send it to you free of charge since I got it for FREE, too! If you are interested in the school, PM me about it.

OH COOL!!!
I'm almost done with mine mwuhahaha.. i sacrificed my summer vacation though -.-;; sigh ( oyea, just to mention, i didnt even think about going into art before the start of junior year lol.. So i started working on my portfolio around october of junior year and have been doing it since. I took art classes just for fun before, never considered art college)
but i digress. I went to visit RISD this summer and the lady person said that for yuour portfolio, submit only your best works. So, her example was that if you drew all pencil and did a great job and did one charcoal drawing which came out..eh, then dont submit that charcoal JUST to show that you can use charcoal lol. (Of course, i'd advise yuou to use all mediums - pencil, color pencil, charcoal, acrylic paint, water color, etc)
oh and btw, how was the RISD pre-college? I'm aiming to go to RISD myself and i'd like to know how living on campus was and ay know, the general stuff
OH YEA..how many do you have? I have 15 drawings/projects w/e right now and i need to do maybe one or two more PLUS the RISD home test. omg home test, you should get started on that asap because its UBER important - the RISD people can determine if you really are the artist behind your portfolio by looking at your home test (Because many peple just simply BUY, yes BUY, their portfolio =X )
wow. That was long.

I've barely started...and i really should
well, I DID start...but the whole idea of college apps has me so strung out, that everything just turns out looking crappy...
and I think I've wasted more trees and paper than anything
I'm going to apply as an illustration major...so for anyone who may know...is it better to have more realistic(like still lives) pieces in your portfolio or more 'creative' ones?
I'm planning on applying to
FIT
AI Boston (the close-to-home, no need for dorms choice)
Syracuse
School of Visual Arts
Pratt
I'm leaning most towards FIT, so any advice on what their standards are would be helpful
