I'm an upcoming sophmore and want to take up a language, but I can't decide which one on take.

I took Spanish throughout high school so I'm familiar with it, but am in no way GOOD at it.

Then again I've kind of always wanted to take Japanese. I don't know what it is, curiosity maybe.

help?

Where do you live?
Is the area where you live dominated by asians or non-asians?

It's mainly what kind of environment you live in..and YES, your own preferences too...

But you gotta ask yourself which one is more useful for ya~

Not that it's because I'm Chinese or anything, but I think Chinese would be a helpful language in the future, but it's quite difficult to learn.

I'd take Spanish though, I don't know, it's because I live in California O_O

Well since you've already taken Spanish in high school, why not expand and learn it in college. Trust me, you'll actually learn something and understand easier with the prior knowledge that you already have.

I took Japanese for 4 years in high school then took a semester off of it during my first year and then took it my 2nd semester is was easily able to pick everything up. Plus, I learned way more in 1 semester than I did in 4 years of high school. And I'm also currently taking JPN right now as well. The same could happen if you want to continue Spanish. I'm not saying that you should, it's just an easier choice also because there are many Spanish-only speakers around so you'd be a great asset to them.

Also how many countries can you go to where spanish is an official language? How about Japanese? The Spanish-speaking population in the states is much greater than the Japanese-speaking population, and how many Japanese-speakers in the states don't know how to speak english? How about spanish-speakers that can't speak english?
Spanish is just more useful

Spanish. I took 4 years of it in high school and thought I was "okay", but not "great"...but then I took it in college. Everyone else was SO bad, that I suddenly realized I wasn't bad at all, I just had a complex about it since everyone in my high school class scored like...1400-1600s on their SATs and were super smart. I definitely recommend Spanish if you live in a big city or plan to at any time. Going to school in D.C., so many of the people I meet speak Spanish. I also work as an art teacher at a summer camp, and about 1/2 of my kids speak Spanish. My boss wanted to make sure everyone she hired had at least minimal experience with the language.

Yeah, if you live in California, or areas where there are a lot of Spanish people then take Spanish. But if you plan to work overseas, going to places like Japan and stuffs like that then take Japanese. I don't think there's such thing as which language is better, it's really entirely up to your preference. I love Spanish, I took it for 4 years, yet I couldn't even speak it now >__< although I do understand some stuffs people say.

Japanese is also a lot easier if you know Korean well, Japanese has a very similar grammar to Korean.

you should pick what you really want to learn. The one that you want to learn will be the easier one to pick up.

You choose one based on your future career
I picked Japanese, it's not that useful outside of Japan, especially not compared to Spanish but it pertains to my major and what I'd like to do in the future

Japanese is more in demand for business, as they have the second largest economy in the world. People also have cult-like obsessions with things like anime and manga, and the culture is pretty rich in Japan (not that anyone sees past the anime but ya know). There's a hell of alot more people fluent in Spanish and English than there are Japanese and English which would make you valuable and anything you do that involves the language will earn you more money.
Spanish is more useful worldwide, and a knowledge of Spanish will make learning things like Italian much easier. That's the great thing about european languages is that they're all connected in some way..Japanese isn't connected to anything/ Japanese is not connected to Korean, the grammar may be similar but a speaker of Korean or Japanese could not understand or read each other's language like a Swede could understand a Dane or a Portugese person could understand a Spanish person.

If I would have to recommend a language I would choose mandarin

A note with both Japanese and Mandarin: You must learn the characters and the written language, if you do not know the kanji or the hanzi then you really don't know the language

I took Japanese in highschool and I speak Spanish fluently. I'd say take Spanish, you will actually learn a lot more in college than you did in highschool. Japanese can become a real pain to learn if you don't have some familiarity with Kanji and such.

I took Japanese in high school and college. The first year of Japanese was very easy, but it will get harder later on. I mainly have problem with the Japanese grammar. Also there is a different dialect between male and female, and it can get confusing sometimes. If you are looking for an easy A or want to have fun in class, Japanese is the best choice.

Spanish would be an easier language to took and master. Japanese would take more time and commitment to master. I am planning on picking up a minor in Japanese. I personally find Japanese more useful since I'm into Anime and Manga.
