a friend once told me that you cant rap or be an artist if you cant write songs that can be sung too...

i never really figured it out.. i cant seems to really write lyrics for an original melody

for those people who wrote their own song (singing)... is there anything that i should know? like how when i write raps i listen to the drum patterns, speed etc. so like when you write songs do you like need to know what pitch or whatever as a guide line to the lyrics?

gimme a hand here vicx.gif

I think it should be the same as writing a rap. Just listen to the melody of the beat. Get a feel of what notes sound good with it. after that, write the lyrics xD

But then again, I'm not the kind that writes songs sleep.gif

just make up stuff anytime you feel like singing and sumtimes you hit a good line and you stop and think hey that was cool and you jot it down in a notebook. over time you'd have a big collection of one liners which you can sort of mix and match into a song

First, you write out a story.. then you try to sing it.. like create a new melody out of it. Then you'll get some ideas on how you want it to be. Then the melody part comes out, and you keep modifying your lyrics to fit into the tempo of the melody!

Hope it helps, I've taken beginner song writing courses before. smile.gif

It depends on the kind of music you're writing and what kind of tone and mood the song you're writing has. Country, acoustic, folk, and rock-based writing has more of a tendency to go from lyrics to music whereas pop, dance, r&b, and hip-hop goes from music to lyrics.

If you're writing to a beat, generally speaking, I'd recommend just singing along to it with any random words that pop into mind until you find a melody that you think is suitable to use and then from there progress into writing lyrics based on a general theme or idea (i.e. "This is a happy love song," "This is an angry love song," "This is a song about ____ person and how much I ____ them."). Sometimes thinking of a title based on the beat itself can help you decide how you're going to approach writing lyrics.

If you're going from lyric to music then there's tons of approaches. You can start out as writing poetry or you can just randomly think up melodies with lyrics in your head (which is what I generally do).
