My teacher for AP Bio sent out a letter a while ago telling every student that takes the class to purchase the book. The purchase is not neccessary, but highly recommended. The textbook is $150-200 new and $80-110 used.

My question is, is purchasing really a good idea and how much would it help me?

They want you to buy the book so you can mark them up and stuff. Yea they do cost 150-200 new because they are college textbooks.
I don't really think you need your own book. Just write your notes on paper and not in the book lol

humm...I haven't taken AP Bio but for US and World, I didn't write or mark the books in anyway. It was the review books that I highlighted. I used post it's in the books but that's it.

I think you should get the book

Unless your teacher goes into very good depth and you are able to retain all the info with notes or memorization, i think it'll be quite hard because you will need to constantly review

But notes /w review guide might be good enough, iono :/

you should ask people who've taken the class to see if they have it. maybe you could borrow? =]

if that book a supplementary material?.. bcuz in our schools we have to buy our own textbooks for AP classes.. this year my load costed like... $300 even tho i bought all old ones...

if the book is realllyy important.. i suggest that you do buy it.. then sell it online... or sell it to someone whoz taking that class next year...

i`m taking ap bio
& i didn`t have to buy anything
other than some lab books
for about like 15 bucks...

i don`t get why your teacher
is recommending you guys
to purchase the book. is it a supplementary
book & not the actual textbook?
or does she just want you to
be able to take notes directly in the book??

i got it for 20 bucks, so i got lucky.
try and get it used, and look first, because you may find a better deal

if u plan to take the class seriously, get a 5, and learn almost everything in the book then buy it

if you're prone to procrastination, don't care if u get a 2 or 3 or perhaps luck out, or if you're bad at taking notes and organizing your studies then don't

I think you should get the book. I've never had to buy a textbook before, but one of my teachers said he always used to buy a used book because sometimes people write useful notes inside or something- and he also admited to being cheap. lol.

IT WILL HELP YOU A LOT!

That's my opinion. AP Biology is not a subject that can be touched by small little prep books like those of Princeton Review.

AP Biology has soo many chapters to cover and you're really going to need it.

Then again there's the question of are you going to be needing AP Biology in your future career? Or are you doing it just for the sake of getting the AP score? If its both then I suggest you waste that money to buy it.

I'd say if you want to mark up the book then buy it, but if you like taking notes then just use one they give you. At my old high school I took AP American History and AP European History and we we're allowed to highlight stuff in the books we we're given by the teachers without having to pay extra.

Yeah. Even though our school gives us one to use, I also bought my own. It's really cheap. It ranges from $10- $20. If you want it with a solution guide, probably $45 plus shipping. I got mine for $43 with shipping (solution manual and book). Go to ebay or half.com

When I took AP Bio last year the school provided the books and everything else. Since we don't have the same teacher, I suggest you ask someone who has already taken the class. Or you can just wait until you need a book and then buy one. Another way is just using a friends book or you both can split the cost and share it, but of course you will have to be together if there's hw out of the book and etc.
