I was just wondering for all you IB slaves, is the Diploma really worth it? Or is it better to just take some IB classes.
I feel like its a shame to not get the diploma when im taking basically everything for a diploma, except math! Its because I want to do 4 years of orchestra. I dont want to give that up just for the diploma. Or is it better to get the diploma? Will the diploma boost acceptance for college?

Opinions? Advice?
all appreciated smile.gif

My opinion would be that that diploma would be worth it for college admission because of the fact that they will see you are taking the hardest possible courseload...However when they see you going for just IB certificates and not the whole IB diploma, theres going to be questioning about whether you opted out of challenging youself...But then again orchestra shows your passion for a particular extracurricular activity, which is plus for college admissions....Anyways what colleges are you planning on applying to??? Would there be a possible way to do both???

Anyways I wish I opted out of being an IB diploma candidate at my school, and wished I just choose AP classes, because the IB program at my school is in its infant stage, and just lost all its funding, and its going down the drain in a couple of years...But since I've started it, I"m going to have to complete it

But no matter what a full IB diploma candidate is going to be looked upon better then one with just IB certificates. Since your school offers full IB, I recommend you take it because if you skip it, admissions are going to see that you skipped out on the hardest possible courseload...Also please list what classes of yours are SL and HL.

Can't really answer if IB psych is hard, because it varies from school to school and really depends on the teacher, plus I didn't take psych.

Also since you said your not taking math, but I would recommend you do, you should also take all your core classes all four years of high school

Again what colleges are you considering and what grade are you in right now

i used to be in IB. yay for the diploma. haha.

well, i'm sure you know this, but the Diploma = a lot more work than certificate, due to CAS, the EE, and TOK stuff.

if you live somewhere outside of the US, or plan on attending college out of the US, then you can gain acceptance to certain universities if you get a certain amount of points on your diploma.

in case you were wondering, i took:
IB English HL
IB History HL
IB Biology HL
IB Chemistry HL
IB Spanish SL
IB Math SL
IB TOK

Lol, I've been wondering the same thing, but then I just told myself I'm lazy and need to stop procrastinating. I already know that I won't get the diploma with the grades and teachers I'm getting but then I'm trying my hardest anyway/.

I am a junior in high school going for the IB diploma.
ahh.. let's just say I messed around a little too much sophomore year and encountered too many problems and that made my GPA go down to a 3.5 (I had like 2 D's and 3 C's) but I am trying to bring it back up and didn't get my college credit for AP US History neither because I got a 2 on the test mainly because I hit a bad stage during that time, family and friend problems.

I think its worth it but the workload is harder. Let's see my classes for junior year are.

-IB British Lit
-Honors Pre Cal
-Honors Spanish 3
-Honors Phyiscs
-IB Information Tech
-IB Physics
-IB Theory of Knowledge
-IB AP Euro History

Can anyone tell me if that is going to affect what college I go to? Since I messed up so bad Sophomore year?
Last time I checked I think i ranked like between 80-100 out of 800-900 kids, is that bad for college also?

well what sort of colllege/university r u trying to get into?

i took IB too but i took only the certificate so i didn't have to do the extended essay, or CAS hrs...

i took all the classes, and they're a big load....

it looks nice in ur college resume... if u're trying to get into schools like harvard or standford, it'd look really good... but if u're trying to get into a nearby university that u think might b easy to get into, it might not be as worth it...

just to let u know, ib is not something that colleges really consider... instead ap=ib, and band is always a good thing, stick with your passion...

I dropped my full IB thing 2nd semester of my junior year. Sometimes I regret it, but if you're a committed student & do what you gotta do, you can do it. That was something I couldn't do. I still have pretty much a full IB schedule, but I'm considered certificate instead of full IB candidate.

it depends on your school's IB program. If it's still not that good, and you get bad scores on your IB exam, it's not worth it, but if your school has an awesome IB program that many colleges recognize then go for it=]

For example, my school's IB program is the oldest in the state of FL, and every year we always get 1 or 2 students going to each of the top 20 best US universities, so if your in the top 10 for your IB class your usually garunteed to get into a good university.

But most importantly, do YOU want to do it? since it's a lot of work, and if you know you want to be a musicien later on in life then go w/ orchestra since you know that's what you want to do, and 4 years of orchestra will look really good on your app for an arts school
