My computer is so slow, i mean it lags when i open anything: the internet, aim, music and stuff. Is there anything i can do to help my computer run faster? It also shuts off randomly, i don't know why it does but one time i lost part of my research paper. I'm clueless at what to do with these things so that's why i'm asking here.

You could completely reinstall your operating system if you don't mind backing up all the stuff you have on your computer. If you do this make sure to install anti virus software and some spyware to protect your computer. Alot of this is basic stuff you probably already know, but this is the best I can think off.
Another thing is to try TuneUp Utilities. I downloaded my copy from
download.com. It is a free trial version and have system requirements like most software. You should check to see if you meet those and if you want, try it out. My laptop is about 3-4 months old and was an open box. It was all funny and pretty slow. I reinstalled everything and made sure to protect it with the virus protection and stuff. I installed and it made some changes. Computer booted faster and know runs OK. Hope this helps (probably won't....

There are a lot of ways you can speed up XP without Re-Formatting. If you DO format, I really hope you have a legit serial key and drivers ready. I would reccomend against this unless you know what you're doing. Formatting is usually a last resort for most cases.
Add more RAM, new HDD, clear out stuff, disable processes and uninstall crap you don't need.
