When you leave your home and the culture that you're used to how does it feel to adjust and how long does it take
What was most difficult
What was exciting and enjoyable

I just moved to the states for uni , i'm american but haven't lived here in over 11 yrs so it was a culture shock. I moved from seoul where everything is crammed but organized, fast paced but welcoming.
I guess I just want people to share their experiences and tell why they moved and what not.

I just came here to get a better education but I feel like I'm missing out on life since my life is back home. Hehe I'm sure it'll get better but I'm kind of wacko.gif

I go to Cal Poly Pomona and am majoring in biotechnology (about the same as biochem). I want to study abroad in Hong Kong, but neither Cal Poly nor CSU has the program that fits me. Any ideas/suggestions? Thanks!!

well I'm from Canada and is in the states for schooling..I've been in the states in and out for vacation so it wasn't really a culture shock..but it's exciting yet scary..exciting because I get to meet new people and scary because of the fact that I'm growing up..and the homework >.> LOL..

I'm from Indonesia for my uni too. Right now I'm in PCC, to save money on the GE then transfer to CSU. CC and CSU aren't as expensive as the other colleges like UCs or private ones such as USC. However, being an international student and Indonesian that has a weak currency, tuition fees and living expenses are expensive for me. I come from a mid class family back home so $3000 per semester tuition fee at PCC is already way costly for us. If you want to convert it, it's around Rp 30.000.000. Only the richer Indonesians could afford the private ones. So my point is, all expenses are just..expensive! Hahah..
Experiences.. hmm.. Well it's just that I have more freedom here. I live here with my older sis, so yea we can do what we want. The exciting things are to know the differences between the states and my home which include a lot of things such as cultures, places, weather, et cetera. But, I havent seen my parents for a year who are thousand of miles away and I miss them.
Another thing that I miss is the food. There are Indonesian food here but the taste is just not that good.
I guess I typed too much already. Hahah..

^ ditto on the origins but i go to college in the midwest... can't tell you the name of the institution lest the honor code police come and catch me socializing online (highly discouraged) and posting about all the stuff i do off-campus (strictly forbidden)... anyways, yeah i go to one of the cheapest doctorate universities (if not the cheapest) in the us... i moved mainly cos the education system in my country isn't challenging me at all and they don't have a decent film program there (well, it's not exactly usc here but at least we have last year's mtv movie awards' best movie to be proud of)... i've been studying abroad since i was 15 so i didn't exactly have to adjust to living away from home, but i did have to adjust to the local culture (which is different even from the typical american culture) but that didn't take too long... one thing tho weather sucks big time since it still snows in april wtf... food is good i'm not big into indonesian food anyway, and language is not a problem (before i got annoyed by people thinking i'm hispanic and started taking spanish just so i can say... soy de asia, no hablo espanol, no no en serio! no es una broma!!) it can be expensive in the states i guess so yay to full-tuition scholarships!! academic-wise it's still not as challenging as i'd like (yet...) but at least i get credits for watching foreign films... so yea...

double ditto there!
from Indonesia, now in Belgium, cause my parents think that the future economy and carrier in my country isn't so good.
anyway, the language is a big barrier here, I've learn the language for a year, I understand what the professor says, but have no clue what the students say. So despite of being away from home, I'm kinda lonely, 'coz it's hard to get along when you don't know what to say
I got no problem with the food here, but stil drooling everytime I remember some home traditional cooking from Indonesia.

about the culture....from strick East to free West culture, yeah it's a big shock ohmy.gif , but I'm try to be cool about it
I wish I can study in USA, but the dentistry there are unbelivably expenssive...... (like all of the dentistry in English languaged country in the world) sweatingbullets.gif

grew up in malaysia, but studied at singapore since 8 and came to tokyo when i was 16.

went to singapore because my mum wants me to be more english-literate, and i chose to opt for tokyo instead of germany for the fun of it. i got sick of singapore [its great, but its too small, and the life there got pretty borin] and its education system, so decided to go overseas, and lastly decided on tokyo.

imma pretty much an independant kid, so the whole stayin by myself didn't freak me out. it helps if you are an only child like me hahas.

wil be goin to LA for a year xchange and back to tokyo again for the final year.

the only thing i miss about home is our food, my family, my church, my friends, and my absolutely adorable god nephew.

culture shock - tokyo is scary when you first exposed to it. it's scary, yet it suck you in RIGHT there. tokyo is AMAZING. i had been here for a year, and i love each and minute of it.

i speak japanese fluently now, after 1 year of stayin, and i think tokyo is amazin. inside out, amazin. tokyo is not what you think in that short period you'd stayed with the tour. it's so much more than fashion, hot guys, bubblesocks and whatsnot.

what impressed me about tokyo is how metropolitan it is, yet how it's enriched with old cultures.

tokyo pwned i swear.

wow creepy ~! i can't imagine going to such a fundamentalist university. anyway i'm doubling up in languages courses and taking french and chinese, so i think it would be great for me to study abroad in france or china. i'm considered an international student already anyway though even tho i lived here for 8 years and graduated high school here (i'm not US citizen). i'm not sure if such programs are offered for students that are already international, wouldn't that be like double abroad? lol unsure.gif

well, they don't exactly discourage socializing online (we do use facebook) but i've written about some stuff here that they wouldn't be very happy about if they found out... you know, stuff that are against the law here in the us (but not in the country where i did them)... and they're kinda anal about that, i guess...

I want to study abroad in the medical field in either korea or hong kong. I heard that korea medical programs are pretty good however, I do not speak anything other than English.

- I heard that a criteria for studying abroad is some sort of knowledge of the language either proof of education (how many years you studied it) or taking an exam. I'm not sure of this but I went to a person in a study abroad fair.

Anywho, I want to study abroad before i start pharmacy or pre-med (still deciding) which is before my third year, I am a freshman now. I think hong kong may be my best choice if i want to experience a foreign country since hong kong citizens speak english fairly well.

Yeah! I'm thinking about Yonsei University, too, and I'm UW's student. But I'm kind of scare 'cuz I don't speak or take Korean. I really want to take Korean class, but my parents want me to take the useful one. sad.gif

my mom and two of my uncles graduated from yonsei, but i heard their international student program isnt that great cuz a lot of students just party around and dont study too hard in general. not speaking korean shouldn't be that much of a problem for international students. i heard u can take the beginner class when u get there, but u might want to check for more info.

lol That isn't sound good to me at all. But I think I like it... I mean I don't like party, but the reason that I want to study abroad in Korea is because I want to see my idols. I know that's crazy, but I desperate to see DBSG, Bi, ect., rite now.
