This has got to be the dumbest question >_<
When I'm using the eraser..how do I change it so it's soft??
I want to blend but I can't until I figure out how to make the eraser soft so it doesn't look all choppy.
Thanks for any help
I'll answer this in two parts.
1. When you're using the Eraser tool, you can use ANY brush in your brushes collection.
And all the options apply, as well. To increase the size of any given brush, type the ] (close bracket - Nex to the P key) key as many times as it takes. You'll see the brush size setting increase on the tool options bar at the top (CS and CS2). To decrease the size of the brush, press the [ (open bracket) key. To increase or decrease the hardness of the brush, hold the Shift key while pressing the [ or ] keys. The [ key makes the brush softer while the ] key makes the brush harder.
2. When blending, I find that most people use the eraser or selection tool to actually erase the pixels on that layer. A much more efficient way is to use a layer mask. A layer mask hides or shows parts of the image you choose. With the layer you want to edit active, click the icon on the bottom of your layers palette that looks like a square with a circle in the middle. That's the layer mask icon. It'll add a white box next to the thumbnail of your active layer. Since the box is completely white, it'll show everything on that layer. Grab a brush tool, with a soft edge, and start painting with black while the mask thumbnail is active (border around the mask box). Paint over some parts of the image, and it'll look like you're erasing. But change the brush color to white, and paint over the same spots. Now it's back.
Play with these two methods to see which serves your purpose better.
I use both of these techniques depending on what I'm working on.
