I HOPEEE you're talking about the diagonal lines =_=;

i have to go to sleep.. but i'll take you through it really quick^^

MAKING THE PATTERN
1: open new file [4x4pixels]-make sure its a transparent layer
2: zoom in as much as you can [x1600]
3: with your pencil tool [set to 1pxl] creat this shape
IPB Image
4: go to edit>define pattern> name your pattern> O.K.

APPLYING THE PATTERN
1: open your file
3: click on channels
IPB Image
4: create a new layer in channels ^the black layer
5: choose your paint bucket tool, and change the option from foreground to PATTERN
IPB Image
6: fill in your canvas and you'll get this:
IPB Image
7: as indicated above.. click that, and you'll notice the lines will get selected [did that make sense??]
8: NOW go back to layers and make a new layer[select that layer] and you'll get this
IPB Image
9: pick the color you want your lines to be.
10: press CTRL + BACKSPACE and deselect your layer
11: now, just play around with things like the opacity and the blending options, and brightness/contrast.. and then TADA!!!!!!!!

if you need anymore help.. or if i helped with the wrong thing.. tell me^^

OH YEA! SORRY FOR THE HORRIBLE PAINT SKILLS!

Nice tutorial.

Just wondering about your choice to use the Channels palette.
Any particular reason you did that as opposed to just creating a new layer, Ctrl+A, then filling that layer with the pattern?

It would seem that you're really bad with descriptions, also.

'Really cooly and stuff like some do it on the side and have those lines' doesn't exactly tell us anything, does it?
Or am I retarded...

Post some examples.

nope im just retarted. I am bad with descriptions (always get marked down for that in my essays)

see I just made this graphic. one of my first

like give me suggestions on how to make the text fit the image better and how to make it like more like the image and stuff.

You can choose the initial color by using the color chooser.
After that, you can change it to whatever color you wish by using the Hue/Saturation/Lightness settings.
As well as the opacity and blending modes.

The Channel method seems a bit round-a-bout to me.

But like with anything else in Photoshop, there are always a hundred ways to do one thing.

Typography (the art of using text) is often left as an 'afterthought' by people who are so concentrated on creating an 'image' that they forget to think about what the text brings to the entire project.

I'm glad you're realizing that it's an important part of any image.

With so many fonts and styles to choose from, it can get a bit intimidating to try to choose the correct font type, size, and style for your image. Because in the end, it's going to be about preference.

There's no rule saying that certain fonts go with certain types of graphics.
There are, however, certain basic principles you should consider when choosing your typography.

I'll list a few examples.

01. If you take a look at your graphic, your eyes are drawn to the right top corner because the image is so strong there.
One method of using fonts is to 'counter-balance' the weight in the top right corner by placing an element in the lower left corner.

Fonts used: Trajan Pro for 'MERRY' and Impact for 'CHRISTMAS'.
No effects.

01.IPB Image

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

02.Another method is to strengthen that corner even more by using the text.
By lining it up with one of your square shapes, it gives it a nicely balanced look. As opposed to it looking like you just stuck it there randomly.

Fonts used: Century Gothic for 'MERRY' and Century Gothic Bold for 'CHRISTMAS'.
Medium opacity drop shadow added to 'separate' the text from the image.

02.IPB Image

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

03.The final example I have illustrates making the text 'one' with the graphic.
It's there. And it's obvious. But the blending mode keeps the text unobtrusive.

Fonts used: Same as previous.
Layer mode set to 'Soft Light'.
Same drop shadow kept as previous.

03.IPB Image

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

I could honestly sit here all day, and post examples, but in the end, it's mostly about what you like, and what you think looks good.

My guess is that most of the Soompi users will choose the third one as their favorite, as Soompi seems to be 'blend crazy.' I, myself, prefer the first one.

Hope that helps.

^for the lines just choose lines instead of custom shape, and change the size of the lines^^ and its not solid white right? so just change the opacity/blending option^^

You need to move the font file to C:/WINDOWS/Fonts

For me, the font usually doesn't show up until I go directly to the font folder and see that it's there.

I hope that helps?

i was wondering how people make their graphics like this? like the glowy/messy effects? people kept telling me to mess around with the filters, but i still dont get how they make them. do you have to have a certain kind of brush and then do all these filters to it? can you name a few filters/steps?

The shapes and textures you see in that image are just layers and layers of Custom brushes and/or random textured layers (as well as photographs) that the user has 'blended' with the rest of the graphic by using various methods.

Here's how you get the 'glow' effect.

Duplicate the layer you want to apply the 'glow' effect to.

On the duplicate layer, apply a Gaussian Blur (Filter>Blur>Gaussian Blur) at or around 4px.
Set the layer's Blending Mode to either 'Soft Light' or 'Overlay' depening on the effect you want.
You can duplicate the blurred layer to increase the amount of blur.
Alternatively, reducing the Opacity of the blurred layer will decrease the blur amount.

To achieve this effect for text, after duplicating the text layer, Rasterize the lower of the two text layers (if you run the filter on a text layer without Rasterizing it first, Photoshop will prompt you with a 'You have to rasterize this layer in order to use this filter' type of dialogue box, giving you the option of Rasterizing before continuing).
Apply the blur filter to the bottom layer (the amount of blur will depend on the size and style of the font used).
No need to change the blending mode.
To increase or decrease the blur amount, either duplicate the blurred layer, or run the same filter again by pressing 'Ctrl+F'. Do this as many times as you desire.

Hope this helps.

Ack sorry about that. I've been kind of busy so I haven't been able to sit down and make a tutorial for you. Also, I don't really have a good quality picture that I can work with. Would you happen to have one? All the ones that I have are those crummy haduri ones. If not, I'll just have to show you another way.

[edit]

SECOND VERSION.

Alright, this was something that I quickly pulled together so please excuse the... briefness. I just randomly googled for this picture, so I have no idea who it is. If anyone else has a different way of doing anything, please feel free to add on. And I recently got CS2 so there might be a few tools that other version of PS don't have.

ORIGINAL PIC

I suggest that you use the original and follow the steps. Then, once you get the hang of it, you can go edit some other picture.

for each step, duplicate the layer before you start any more changes.

1. The first thing that I noticed with this girl is that her right cheek is slightly chubbier than the left and not that "even". So, go to Filter > Liquify... and a new window should pop up. Select the Forward Warp Tool (W), choose a brush size of about 150 and pressure ~30 then slowly push in the cheek and other areas you think might need some 'thinning' out.

This is what you want it to look like. It doesn't have to be exact, just something like that or whatever you think looks best.

2. I got a bit freaked out by her large eyes. So we're going to make them a bit smaller (but not too small). Go back to Filter > Liquify... and this time select the Pucker tool (S). Choose a brush size that is similar to the size of the eye, but slightly larger and click once or twice, until you think the eye looks like a good size. If you want to ENLARGE eyes, however, you can choose the Bloat tool, which is right underneath the Pucker tool.

Example

3. Her face structure seemed a bit out of place, so using the Forward Warp Tool again, I brought in the top part of her head + face.

Example

4. This step isn't necessary, but I attempted to make her lips fuller using the bloat tool. just select a brush about the same size as her lips and click a couple of times. Make sure you don't over do it, but if you do happen to make any mistakes, just reconstruct.

Example

5. As you can see, her skin has a few blemishes. Grab the Healing Brush tool and stamp away any spots or pimples on her face. If your version of PS doesn't have the healing brush tool, the clone tool works just as well. Just be sure to select a point very close to the spot, otherwise you'll end up having different coloured skin.

Example

6. This step isn't necessary, either. I just added a layer of Gaussian Blur on 4.2 px (You can change this to what you want) changed the layer setting to Soft light and erased away the non-skin areas. As you can see, her skin now seems softer. But this makes it look obvious editing has been done.

Example

7. Her left eye (your right) seemed a bit tilted downwards compared to her right eye. So, using the lassoo tool, select her right eye and then go to Edit >Free Transform (Ctrl + T on your keyboard). Then if you have your mouse outside the box that appears, you should notice little curved arrows. Click and rotate the eye a little bit CLOCKWISE just a few degrees..

Example

8. Now for the bags / dark circles underneath her eyes. They aren't actually that bad. I usually blur away the undereye area and then use the dodge tool (make sure the exposure is LOW. Around 10-20%) and highlight those dark areas until they sort of match the surrounding skin. Another way I sued to do it was with the clone tool but that always made it look really fake.

Example

9. Wanting to enhance her eyes, I used the Burn tool to highlight the eye. Make sure the brush size isn't that big. I like using 3px. Outline it as if you're putting eyeliner on her. Make sure that you're always fooling around with the exposure levels. You don't want it too dark for the lower lid, of course, so you'd have something about 10%. You might even want to draw in some more eyelashes for her. Just make sure you don't overdo anything.

Example

10. Her lips seemed kind of dull and dry. Smooth them out with the blur tool (again, an appropriate brush sizemust be used!) and you can even make a new layer, paint a pinkish hue over the lips and change the layer settings. I've chosen a bright pink, covoered her lips and changed the layer setting to Saturation.

Example

11. The picture itself might seem a bit dark and gloomy. You can always brighten it up by going Image > Adjustments > Brightness/contrast.

Example

12. Finally, I didn't like how around her eyes and other areas had some dark patches. I got rid of those with the dodge tool (Brush size is variable, hardness 0% and exposure <30%).

That's what I ended up with. I don't think it's complete yet, though. There are still areas of her face structure that don't seem right to me, but then that's completely up to you. The main thing with this sort of thing is to fool around.

This is not the best tutorial there is. I know that. So that's why no one should be taking this out of the forum. If you must, ask for my permission first, please.

if you have any major problems, feel free to PM me. i'll try to help (if i can)

I think they blended the Se7en picture into the other picture. You can crop pictures to blend them in?

And the lines underneath are a brush. The normal kind of brush, you should already have it. Go to 'Square Brushes', and then draw the lines underneath. That's what I do. And I guess it really depends on how you're going to use it in the picture. Some pictures look good with it, some not.
