Turtles regained the top spot from Psy with their song "비행기" (Aeroplanes). Overall, it is the 4th week that this song has been No. 1. The top 4 songs are still the same with Ha Dong Kyun and See Ya at No. 3 and No. 4 respectively. These 4 songs have occupied the top 4 spots for the last 5 weeks. But we have a lot of new albums released and new songs should come up pretty soon.

3 new songs this week and they are doing quite well. Cherry Filter released their long awaited 4th album last month, and the title song "Happy Day" debuts at No. 7 this week. This song has the vintage Cherry Filter type of music, with a hard rock upbeat melody, yet is mainstream enough for mass acceptance.

Another rock type of song, Park Jung Ah's "Yeah", comes close to the top 10 entering the chart at No. 11. Park Jung Ah gives us such a pleasent surprise with her first solo effort. The music style is pop-rock, which is very different from Jewelry's music. I am very impressed with her album and her performances.

The last new entry at No. 16 is Hwan Hee's "Tomorrow", from the MBC Drama "Over The Rainbow". We have a lot more songs from dramas entering our top 20 this year, even though the drama itself may not have scored a high rating. This is another example.

We are seeing another trend in Korean music - a lot of former or current group members are releasing their solo albums or songs, and most of them are doing quite well. This week on our chart, we have Ha Dong Kyun (Wanted), Girl Friends (Yuri of Cool + Chae Rina of Roora/Diva), Kim Jong Kook (Turbo), Lee Ji Hye (S#arp), Park Jung Ah (Jewelry), Hwan Hee (Fly To The Sky), and Ayumi (Sugar). We'll see more in the coming weeks as Son Ho Young (G.O.D.), Kan Mi Yeon (Baby VOX), and Oh Jong Hyuk (Click-B ) have just released their first solo albums.

Songwriter honor roll - Songwriter Park Hae Woon has 3 top 20 hits this week. He wrote Girl Friends' "May Be I Love You", Lee Ji Hye's "Love Me Love Me", and Hwan Hee's "Tomorrow". Park used to write a lot of hit songs for S#arp. Recently, he also released his first solo album under the name 썬 (Sun).

ARTIST OF THE WEEK - Girl Friends



Our featured artist this week is the female project duo Girl Friends. Both members have previously been successful in groups - Yuri of Cool, and Chae Rina of Roora and Diva. They have been best of friends for years. Now they have a chance to collaborate musically. Like a lot of recent group artists turned solo, Girl Friend's music is very different from what Cool, Roora, and Diva used to perform. Their title song "May Be I Love You" has a hip-hop, funky tune. Chae Rina's rapping is very good and smooth. The duo also invited a lot of artists to participate in their album: SG Wannabe, Baek JiYoung, Lee JaeHoon, Kim Gun-Mo, Monday Kidz, Brown Eyed Girls, Uptown, Ester, Lee Jung, HaHa, HooNiHoon, All Black…etc. That's truly an all-star lineup. Two former members of the top two dance music groups of the 1990s created a new group. The duo are Yoori from Cool and Chae Lina from Loola. After a 10-year-long friendship, the two women teamed up to form Girl Friends. The first album by Girl Friends presents a new side of the two female musicians, musically and appearance-wise. Various musical genres like dance, hip-hop, R&B and funk are included on the album, providing listeners with a variety of fun music. Top Korean artists like Kim Gun-mo, Lee Jae-hoon, SG Wannabe and Baek Ji-young are also featured on the Girl Friends’ new album.

The breakup of legendary K-pop group Baby Vox saddened many fans, but all the members are still in the limelight, each with her own new path to follow. Yoon Eun Hye became a television star with hit MBC drama Palace. Kim Yi Ji appeared in Drama City. Shim Eun Jin started a solo career and played a mute warrior in the historical drama Dae Jo Young. Kan Mi Yeon invited all her closest friends to participate in Refreshing. Collectively, they call themselves Yachaepa, or The Vegetable Group! There is corn (K-pop star and sometime actress Park Ji Yoon), potato (famous lyricist Shim Jae Hee), cucumber (Arirang TV MC Lena Hong), garlic (actress and former Arirang TV Pops in Seoul host Soi), sweet potato (singer, actress, and ex-S.E.S. member Eugene), carrot (ex-S.E.S. member Shoo), and finally our green pumpkin, Mi Yeon herself.

The album offers an impressive variety of genres. "Old Woman" (Track 12) mixes Irish instrumentals with Bang Si Hyeok's melody and the lyrics of Yoon Sa Ra (writer of Kim Jong Guk's A Letter and Kim Beom Su's I Miss You). "Is That All?" (Track 10) is a Korean cover of a song by Taiwanese pop star Jolin Tsai, while White Snow is Falling covers Malaysian Mando-pop singer Fish Leong's song. Oh Jong Hyeok and his group Click-B entered the world of K-pop in 1999 and rose to stardom almost instantly. The modern rock band ‘NELL’ has returned after two years. Their music has a poetic melody in which brings out a distinctive color and a lucid feeling of happiness and sadness. Nell has a very unique sound color and poetic lyrics to their songs that is a story about being lonely and sad. A fantasy illustration artist/director ‘IWAN’ has contributed in designing their album.
