Just ask about one part at a time. If your friends aren't willing to help you, what kinda friends are they?
The engine is the most complex, and will take a long time to understand how everything works.
Start here for a better understanding about how engines work, and how different engines work differently.
How stuff works (Autos)
Yeah, it is overwhelming.

+1 for howstuffworks, it's an amazing site. But you need to be a little more specific about what you want to learn... cars is a very VERY broad subject

it takes a seroiusly long time, when I got into cars, i got in full force because i inheritted a cleanly modded mr2 and started dumping money into it immediately.
Its been a year and a half, 2 cars later, and i still wouldnt say I know a lot about cars. I know general, I can tell you waht to upgrade, but I couldn't replace a headgasket, or do much more than an exhaust or suspension upgrade.
You definately gotta be in it for a long time, just comes with time.

there's a lot to learn.
i've been into cars for about half of my life...and i don't exactly fit into the average demographic of soompi forums. i'll be 25 soon....my earliest memories of doing little work on cars was probably around the time i was 12 or 13. my brother was into ricing out cars(hey, almost everyone from back then would be considered rice by today's standards) and he made me help him do work on his car. i remember helping with a brake job and suspension installation. in the beginning, i hated it because i couldn't drive; and didn't appreciate how valuable the experience was because cars really didn't mean much to me as a 13 year old...Super Nintendo did though:lol:
so yah, sorry for ranting there..but anyways....these days, after all the things i've done and everything i've learnt(which i guess by some people's standards; would be a lot of things) i still feel like i know almost nothing. sure, i can see how much progression i've made since i was a boy; but still, there are times when i feel like i'm not in the know.
the topic of cars in the beginning, seems like it's impossible to understand. once you get to the point where you know how it works you'll either hit a mental wall or grow by leaps and bounds. if you get into the mindset where you're constantly looking to learn something new, then you'll keep growing. once you're satisfied with what you know, you stop right there. if you manage to grow until the point where you hit your second mental wall, and you overcome that hurdle....then your view on cars will forever be altered. you'll never look at them in the same way again. just remember that in most cases, the "mental wall" is also known as "laziness"; you can take that however you want, that's just the way i see it.
in this car enthusiast's perspective, i think it's fair to say that KNOWLEDGE IS POWER. some would argue that to posess knowledge is useless without having practical skill. i say, knowledge truly is power because put quite simply:
"IT'S ONE THING TO KNOW HOW TO DO SOMETHING TO A CAR; IT'S ANOTHER TO KNOW HOW A CAR WILL BE ALTERED BY WHAT YOU'VE JUST DONE TO IT."

^ I learned from this guy and azn akira mostly.
I've been really into cars since I was about 15 or 16 I think. Actually taking time to learn about them and how everything works and what this or that does, along with other misc. things. So that's about 4 years or so?
Who I have met and learned from? The two I just mentioned have been the greatest help to me over the years for many reasons, they have taught me through me asking stupid questions, their few threads that they start, and their many points they make in their posts (because I actually read them lol). Not only that but I have gone through and met Andrew from Tech2motorsports who owns his own company and builds time attack cars, hung out with him for awhile. A few amatuers here and there who have made themselves up to the pros or getting close.
It takes a looong time and you have to give up a lot to learn about cars.
