Hi, this probably the first time I have posted in here. I think my topic title speaks for itself (well it did before being cut off... too long go figure).

This is an important project for me. In my Anthro class on Race, Ethnicity, and Class, we have been asked to write a paper concerning the immigration of a group of people other than our own to the US. I selected Koreans because I am fascinated by Korean Culture. Well, I am just a fan of culture and its beauty period.

Being Soompi is made of a diverse selection of people including many people who have immigrated from Korea or have had relatives (past or present) who have immigrated to the US.

I really would like to hear from you, your experience or experiences of your relatives that you can share. You can share these experiences via e-mail (hoshi_no_ame at yahoo.com) or post them in this thread.

I would like to give a voice to the Korean Immigrant experience. I hope you will participate.

I want to hear the positives and negatives of your experience or relatives experiences. What sort of issues have been most important to you? What issues do you still face?

Thanks for your consideration on this. smile.gif

Well I can't say that much because my family immigrated here when I was only 2 years old. But I can say how my parents are.

After nearly 18 years, neither of my parents are very good at english. Reading comprehension is up there, but speaking is certainly not. But they don't mispronounce alot of words, simply because me and my siblings force it on them from time to time as a joke... they just have an accent. Of course this has given them some difficulty living here; growing accustomed to the culture and living style of Canada.
The thing that really contributed to their not being able to improve on their language is that Canada is very culturally diverse; there was a very large korean community. My dad mostly did business with korean people, and going back to Korea to make money. And while my mom mostly stayed at home to maintain the home, our neighbours were mostly Caucasian. There is a difference in my parents english levels though. My mom has a much weaker accent than my dad, but my dad comprehends alot more than my mom.

I don't know what else to say because I feel like im just rambling on about my parents lol
Hello.

i was born in korea, and moved here when i was 10. i'd have to say the hardest part about adjusting to life here was english, but i was able to speak and write as well as the other kids who were born/raised here within about 2 years or so. my dad speaks english well so he didn't have problem with that, but my mom still has problems with the language ( in general older generation has more problems learning a new language). i think the problem is that, many times the adults (especially females) have no way to be exposed to English in some cities (like los angeles) where there's a lot of koreans. i love the korean culture very much, including the dramas, literature, and technology.

Thanks Kame and Lim. Don't worry about rambling Kame, that was definitely some good information. Thanks again for answering my request. biggrin.gif
