I'm starting to finish all my GURs; [Currently taking: Science & Engineering Phyiscs (calculus based physics), Calculus I, Engineering 123 & Japanese 101]. Going to be choosing my major very soon.

I'm planning to go into Architecture haha, no clue how it is down the road since it's a ~5-6 year course. Maybe Architectual Engineering or maybe just Civil Engineering?

Anyone doing architecture? How is it?

phew...finally i see someone interested in architecture..
coz ppl seldom discuss abt architecture in soompi..
or i missed it?
o.O

this course is not abt studying from books only..
it's study,exams+make models+presentations

time management is really important because it DOES takes lots of time when u r involved in assignments
u'll have to crack your head thinking of EFFECTIVE bldg designs..
space orientation..response to site n climate etcetc..is really important..
u must also be SCALE sensitive..

during presentations of ur design, lecturers/architects from outside will come to listen
they'll ask questions like "y are your space orientated like this?"
believe me, EXPERIENCED architects from outside cannot stand immature designs of students like us
-__-"
they shoot bloody many questions until the student cried or becomes quiet~
but i love that kind of challenge it makes your design mature
instead of "i design it like this because i love it"
your design needs to do a lot of thinking so that you can prepare for the "challenges" by lecturers/architects

when i mean architecture TAKES A LOT OF TIME
i really mean it..
sometimes i don't get to sleep for 2 days in a row
even if i do get sleep...it's 2 hours?
if i get to sleep for 4 hours, i'm thankful

there are ppl who gets to sleep every night..
i don't know...probably they r genius like that or they r just plain lazy to perfect their assignments
it depends on individuals

besides learning how to build bldgs, architecture actually trains u how to think analytically n systematically
so eventually when students graduate from archtiecture, they can also be successful in other fields
i don't know how to explain this.
probably someone with more experience can explain abt archtiecture better

^ you're totally right!.....u have 2 sacrifice lots of time if ur taking this course....so,be prepared to say bye-bye to ur social life.....
i've been in that 'no sleep for 2 days' situation.......it was sooo tiring especially if u have other classes on the same submission day.... wacko.gif
apart from the design unit,u'll study other units which involves calculations & memorising formulas....
very very stressful~~~
not discouraging u or anything, but think very carefully b4 u decide to take this course......
good luck~~~~

Ahh, I see.

Yeah, I wasn't sure if I wanted to do Architecture. It's something I really enjoyed doing in High School; took a class that dealt with Architecture.

I did AutoCAD I - III and Architectural Design in High School and enjoyed it a lot. We built houses and models and other stuff. I could see myself desigining/drafting in the future.

But if I didn't get accepted into it (I heard it's really artsy based but I've been taking a lot of science & math courses).

however, if u tell anybody abt how architecture takes a lot of time
ppl think u make a fuss n exaggerate!!~
>.<"
some ppl just don't know how time consuming it is...
^yeah...be prepared to say bye-bye to ur social life...
i do get to escape for a movie with friends once in 2 months..
usually it's after a submission for an assignment, provided that the next assignment is not due in a few days

one more thing...u cannot plan ur timetable as in..
today i'll design my bldg in 5 hours...
then later i'll build my model...
i can finish it in 2 days~
probably u'll take 2 days just to design ur bldg
sleep.gif
mental blocks..~many things come in..
then during your crit/presentation, ur lecturer might just tear ur drawings down n call it a rubbish
but i haven't met this kind of situation before

u don't need to be really really artsy
architecture is an in-between of arts n sciences

u need to be physically strong (able to work thru day n night) and mentally strong (able to get up again even though u've been criticised by the lecturers until u cry) to survive in architecture

this is not to discourage u or to scare u off from architecture
u have to look at the bright side too, if u r really interested in it, i think u'll really enjoy architecture a lot

even though i live like a zombie everyday, architecture is still a magnet to me
i couldn't picture myself doing other courses other than architecture
i feel that i'm the in-between ppl...
if i were to call myself creative, i'm not really that
if i call myself logical, i'm not also
i'm part of both sides
after all the hard work, everything pays off
i feel really happy in the design process
i couldn't face a book 24/7
i need book sometimes, n other times practical stuffs
things that i can feel n touch ( i sound like a sicko...lol)
XDXD

I'm not in architecture, but most of my friends are. I'll tell you my perspective:
1. They spend half of their time in studio.
2. A lot of them don't maintain a regular sleep schedule. The only ones who do are extremely efficient at time management. What I mean is, a lot of them will go through a night of no sleep (or perhaps 2 hours), and then another night where they sleep for 14 hours from exhaustion.
3. Lots of projects.
4. "The only major you're guaranteed to hurt yourself" (from using knives to cut pieces for model)
5. Most architecture students are passionate about their work.
6. Most architecture students feel like they're "in it together," because they have to endure so much in a collective work space.
7. All other work takes second priority.
8. They have a longer school day than my major (International Relations), and my friend's major (Electrical Engineering), because of labs.
