I feel your pain. Although I am not a grad student, I know what it is like since so many of my friends went to grad school and I was a former chemistry major myself. Let me guess, you work long hours in lab, grading papers left and right for unappreciative undergrads, worry about funding and publishing. All in the end, wondering, who will care about my research and what job opportunities are there for me?

What do u plan to do after you get your PhD? work for a pharm/biotech or try and become a professor?

I'm already working in Pharm, so the PhD would be for a raise and a boost in position here at work.

So how do you like it? I knew people who are in it for the same reason but a lot of them just quit the program. The problem with the PhD is that so many things have to match up for them to get a job and plus, there just too many of them for so few positions.

After my pharmD, I figure I was going to do a fellowship in PK, but I figure there aren't that many pharm companies that hire that many PK scientist. Plus I also I figure I would have to compete with all of the PhD people too for the same few jobs. Then I looked into computational chemistry, and it was the same thing. Great thing about having a professional doctorate instead of a graduate doctorate is you can be average and still get a job.

I basically already have a foot in the door, considering i would have worked at this company for over seven years by the time i do get a degree. In that case, i'm a lock to move up. This company would rather move people in house then get a noob PhD that's unfamiliar with big time Pharm research. But yes, a lot of guys just give up along the way. Unfortunately, i don't have the luxury of a choice.

I've been doing this since I got to college. I just keep telling myself that I'm getting this over with now so I'll have a comfortable life later on.
