Right now, my favorite old school ballad is Frank Sinatra - It Had to be You. Well I don't think you can go wrong with anything Frank Sinatra haha. Julie London is great too. If you ever watched 'V for Vendetta', her song 'Cry Me a River' is the song playing when Evie and V dance together.

I'd like to know what other songs soompiers recommend because I'm looking for new songs to download myself.

This is more jazz, but I love Harry Connick Jr.'s (you might know him as Leo from 'Will and Grace') covers and songs. He also did 'It Had to be You' but more upbeat. I also like 'Wink and a Smile'.

And Michael Bublé, he does more jazz and swing, but he's great. I've actually been listening to his cover of 'Sway' almost the whole day!

Have you tried Billy Holiday? Some of her songs are rather sad, but her version of "It Had to Be You" is really good. Quite different from Frank Sinatra's (whom I also love).

That's all I can really think of right now. Oh have you given Pink Martini a try? They've got some good stuff.

If you like Jazz standards you should try Patti Austins tribute to Ella Fitzgerald. It's awesome. It's called for Ella. Also the Good Night Good Luck Soundtrack is very good Diane Reeves is the singer. Great Album.
I've also been listening to The Very Best of Jane Monheit and Renee Olstead two good albums.

You can never go wrong with Elton John. Hmm, Air Supply and Michael Learns to Rock are good too.

There's a Gene Kelly movie marathon and I just have to mention these songs:

Gene Kelly - Singin' in the Rain
The whole piece is such a joy to watch on-screen too!

Frank Sinatra and Betty Garrett - You're Awful
I love LOVE this song, the lyrics to the song is just so cleverly written!

also

Al Green - I'm So In Love with You
This is the song that plays in the Tide Simple Pleasures commercial laugh.gif

Ray Charles - I Can't Stop Loving You

I remember hearing this on Metropolis, one of the best songs I've ever heard.

I don't know who sings it, but the title of the song is "What a Wonderful World" that's a good classic too.
Let me tell you something you already know. The world ain't all sunshine and rainbows. It is a very mean and nasty place and it will beat you to your knees and keep you there permanently if you let it. You, me, or nobody is gonna hit as hard as life.

If you're looking for really old school music, you should check out The Temptations. "My Girl", "Sugar Pie Honey Bunch", and "Build me up Buttercup" are awesome.

Other other artists I would recommend:
Billy Joel (any Billy Joel song)
Diana Ross and the Supremes ("Can't Hurry Love")
Sam Cooke ("Wonderful World")
Smokey Robinson and the Miracles ("Track of My Tears")
Marvin Gaye
Jackson 5 ("I'll Be There")
Al Green
The Beatles
Elvis Presley

For more recent artists:
Boyz II Men
Michael Bolton ("How am I Supposed to Live Without You")
Lionel Richie
Bryan Adams
Rod Stewart
Richard Marx
Phil Collins
Eric Clapton
All-4-One

I miss well-written music... *sigh*
