i have driven my integra for 2 years now and now im switching to an 2002 rsx type s
the car is here already just gota solve the insurance issue
This is my first manual car actually and I know the basic of driving them from learning off my friend's car(nothing good just the basic of switching gears) I have driven the rsx type s myself because one of my buddies own one himself
now here are my questions (hope you guys can help me cuz i kno a lot of you are really good)
General questions on driving an manual
1. I have seen my friend do a double clutch, is it necessary to do it on the rsx? and is it the same thing as the rev match?
2. how do you rev match exactly, do you just remeber what rpm you are at and then u switch to neutral to match what that number was and gear down or up?
3. I can't seem to start quickly from a stop (no im not those street racers but I would like to know how to get a really good start)
4. is 6th gear really nessasary?
RSX drivers
1. is it me or does it feel like there is grinding when i switch gears from 1-3
2. i bougth this car used, so it didn't come with the manual, can you guys tell me what rpm is good for performance or effiency when switch gears? is it just 1000 before the redline? pleaseee help me
thanks soooooo much guys
i really appreciate it

1. Double clutch is not necessary on any modern cars regardless. It's used to save your synchros by matching input shaft speed to gearbox speeds. No it isn't a revmatch but if done properly, your gear selector should slide in like... yeah...
2. Rev match is matching engine output rpm's to driveshaft rpm's. IE: when shifting down from 4th at 3k rpms, when you get into third, it'll be around 4k rpms. However, when you clutch in, your rpms drop and so you have to blip the throttle and get the revs up to 4k before you engage. This makes your engagment smooth. With single clutch, just clutch in, put it in gear, blip the throttle, and clutch out.
3. To start quickly from stop just requires lotsa practice and for you to really know exactly where your engagement point is. Then you don't have to let out the clutch slowly, just pop it to right before the engagement point and then engage smoothly. A trick i was taught is to practice getting the car engaged without using throttle at all, helps you feel the engagement point.
4. 6th gear... i use it. Saves gas when i'm crusin at 40mph.
I actually drive a Z but just practice driving to get the hang of stick. And shifting point for casual driving is around 2-3k to be economical. For performance, just look up where your peak hp and tq are, shift there.
Hope this was helpful

i still have something that i didn't clear up
you mean u can launch faster without using throttle?
and what's the heel toe all about?
i kinda understand but its still so confusing
say ur in gear 4, and going into the corner
you brake with your toes, clutch in, bring it to neutral clutch out, put some thorttle while breaking, clutch in, gear into 3rd gear? and after the corner you just gear back into 4th am i right?
oh and also,
i notice that some people, when they shift up, they don't go straight to the next gear but instead, they put to neutral for like 1 second and then put into the next gear?
do you kno what's that all about?

do you have to know where the engagement point is to not go back on hills?

Glad it was helpful, anyhoo, the launching without throttle just helps you feel exactly where your engagement point is. That is helpful for getting going quickly at a stop light or not rolling back far on a hill. TO LAUNCH ur car, i'm not entire positive but what i've heard is rev to a certain rpm and dump the clutch.
what you're describing in the 2nd part is a double-clutch, heel-toe downshift. THe clutching out in neutral is the double clutch, and adding throttle with your heel (or side of foot) is the heel-toe. This gets you in the proper gear to take the corner. Then after the corner and you're accelerating, yes you do go back up in gears.
This last thing is simply double clutching. Some really old cars and most race cars don't have synchros, so they have to double clutch to get the gear selector into gear. You can read up on howstuffworks.com for more info.

dumping will just result in burning rubber... for long periods of time. and of course if you have a uber fast car, just gunning it will burn rubber, but i'm slow, so what of it? ha

I use heel toe when braking into a turn. I need the car to slow down so I hit the brakes, shift down, but I also need to keep the revs up for the next gear.
As far as the shifting and momentarily leaving it in neutral thing.. I don't do that. I tend to just shove the shifter into the next gear.

I'll give u the simple answers:
2. Watch a couple Best Motoring videos and you'll know exactly what rev matching is (by actually seeing it). In this stage of your stickshift career, you don't really need to worry about it. You'll cause more problems trying it and may possibly cause an accident if you're too busy watching the tachometer and not paying attention to the road. But basically it's usually done when you're downshifting. Say you're going at 80 mph and need to slow down as fast as possible. By simply braking, it won't slow u down as fast as if u were to brake and downshift at the same time. What rev matching is in simple terms is that you're basically matching the rpms to the gear u are in. For example, in 3rd gear at 60 mph, your rpms is at 4k rpms. In 4th gear at 60 mph, your rpms are at 3k rpms. But let's say you're in 5th gear at 80 mph (and want to slow down to 60 mph by rev matching. To rev match to 4th gear, you would take your foot off the gas, clutch in, shift down to 4th, tap the gas pedal until your rpms hit 3k rpms, then ease off the clutch. The speed, the gear, and the rpms you are in "all match". That's rev matching in simple terms. If u wanted to go to 3rd gear at 60 mph, you would do the same process as above, but rev the rpms to 4k instead of 3k. I don't suggest u rev match at this point since you're a n00b at stickshift as previously stated, so u should wait untill you're better at driving stick in order to attempt it. Rev matching is usually done by the heel/toe technique. It doesn't have to be done by heel/toe, but that's the best way to do it if u need to slow down quickly. And yes rev matching is better for your car.
3. What you're refering to is bogging. Easiest way is to give it more gas as u ease off the clutch. You'll notice that your rpms go lower as the clutch starts engaging which will cause u to bog down. This will be most noticeable if you're starting on a hill. Just give it more gas as u ease off the clutch. For example, let's say u take off normally at 2.5k rpms. Your rpms will naturally go down as u ease off the clutch with a consistent pressure on the gas pedal. All u have to do is keep it at 2.5k rpms and you'll be able to go faster from a start without really launching the car. This may "ride the clutch" a little but helps when u need a faster start without launching the car.
4. 6th gear is not necessary unless u like to waste more gas by being in a lower gear.
Your other questions:
1. Hondas don't have those problems. You may be shifting wrong somehow (either by shifting too fast or shifting to 1st when moving without rev matching) or your used rsx was previously abused. Honda cars have the best shifter feel out of any company and is the easiest car to learn stickshift in.
2. If u want to go fast, shift at 8k rpms, or wherever your redline is at. If u want to save gas by being more fuel efficient shift at 2.5k or 3k rpms. Rule of thumb, the higher u are in the rpms the more u will waste gas. The lower the gear u are in (i.e 1st gear 2nd gear, etc) the more u will waste gas.

Its a common problem with all of RSX's.

1. double clutching is such an old method that was used before synchros. I think it wears the clutch out more. I don't do it. I doubt most people even still double clutch.
2. after driving for a while... you'll know what rpms and what gear and what mph you are at. for example, my gti will be 2k rpms 40 mph in 5th gear.
3. the rsx's clutch has the catch point pretty high up... let out to this point and gas it slightly keeping the rpm's constant until you can fully release the clutch.
4. 6th gear mostly used for freeways... I use it 50+ mph on local streets to save gas.
_____
1. grinding gears is infamous in hondas. my integra, my friends s2k... everyone has had it. Most of the time, people have solved this problem by getting Redline transmission fluid or getting a short shifter. My friend's type S didn't grind though.
2. for performance/speed, you shift at a point when you know you will hit the highest end of the torque curve. you won't know this unless you dyno your car and see it. but moste people just shift at redline when racing. for economy, you shift as low as possible without bogging the car or stalling.

Im not sure what the limits are on the warranty for the DC5, but if its still covered then take it to the dealership to get rid of the Tranny Grind.
Its a common problem with all of RSX's.
I go to dealer and say "My tranny is grinding, can u fix this?"

I don't think it was grinding. Seemed like he misshifted. His revs just soared up afterwards.

also, there WAS an issue with our trannys on the 02-04 where the tranny grind would be a bit more severe. i think there was a TSB out for it, so if your grind gets pretty bad, just search for that. www.clubrsx.com and look under "Problems & Solutions" forum, most of the issues with our cars are covered there.
i regularly shift at around 3-4k.. thats pretty much all you need for daily driving purposes. also, i do tend to use 6th gear frequently. driving around revving to 3-4k usually gives me about 360-370 mi. on a tank.. which is about 29 mpg =]
any other questions and stuff can be found in the rsx forum.. there are a lot of people on the boards and a lot of useful information floating around.

ok what i've found in my car for the tranny grind is that it USUALLY only happens when your car is still cold. let it warm up a lil bit, and you should be fine.
