I took Psychology last year. It's pretty interesting. =D haha that's probably no help to you though.

My tutor is a psych major. She's studying to take the final test the one where you have to pass to graduate in that major.. or something like that.. and she says it's really hard because all her classmates are there for the second time because they couldn't pass!! haha I think she likes it though. =D

Sorry if I am no help. haha I think psych is sooo interesting though =D human behaviors... ahhhh it's like no wonder!! okok. good luck with deciding your major! ^^

I'm kinda young but the subjects I take next year will affect my choice of majoring psychology 2 years down the road...
But I'm interested in it too^^

I heard psychology deals alot with statistics. Why?

Psychology is like any other science, therefore statistics provide hard data that can easily be verified.

As a psychology major you'll probably have to cover courses in the following topics (I'm currently a junior in college and a psych major)

Abnormal psych- what makes people normal vs abnormal? how can you tell if someone is abnormal?
Cognitive psych- how your brain works- memory, perception, processing information, etc.
Developmental psych- how your brain develops as you grow up
Research methods and analyzing psych data
Physiological psych which is basically neuroscience
History of psych- various theories and background as well as people who influenced psych (Freud, Watson, Skinner)

In addtion, you can also take psychology courses on topics that specfically interest you. For example, child psychology, psychology of women, personality theory, psychlogical factors in the elderly, behavioral disorders of children and adolescents, etc.

Hope this helps!

If you're considering psychology as a career, you should go see the requirements to be a clinical psychologist. The process is SO LONG and HARD. There are like a gazillion tests to pass before actually becoming one. I'm serious. I don't even know how people do it. Sorry I'm not sure the exact requirements but the only thing i know is it is hard. Psychiatrist is different and i guess easier in a sense?

But a college major in psy would help in many other areas, e.g. law, international relations, etc.

I think anyone who is planning on going into psychology as a major in university/college should really break from the normal stereotypical view that "psychology = clinical psychology," because there's so much more to it. It's not all about going into a room, talking to a person sitting in front of you, asking them how you feel, or diagnosing them with whatever kind of mental disorder they may have.

There's social psychology, personality psychology, forensic psychology, addictions specialist, child psychology, life-span psychology, cognitive psychology, biopsychology, health psychology, etc etc etc. the CPA has over 54 divisions; I don't know about the APA.

I think you should really look into the different kinds of psychology careers available to you, take a broad range of psychology courses in college/university, and really figure out if clinical psychology is REALLY the thing for you, or whether your interests actually lie elsewhere.

For me, I went in thinking I'll be going into clinical psychology. While I still wouldn't mind doing that, after taking a bunch of psychology courses (I'm now in my 4th year), I realised that what I really wanted to do is actually social/health psychology.

Good luck!

Psychiatry is different, but not any easier. It's usually associated with medical school because a psychiatrist needs to have medical training in order to be allowed to prescribe psychological medication. It's the difference between going to Grad School and Med School, in most schools.

What if you're wanting to become a psychology "teacher" like at a high school.

Then you'll probably want to get a psychology undergrad, and then get a graduate degree in Education, although I'm not too sure on that one
Feel free to msg me if you want contact info :D

^^ dark_chancellor, What do you want to do with a Social/health Physchology degree?

I want to do Sociology, but I'm considering doing social psychology along with it. It's just that all the biology involved isn't really what I'm interested in(Although I can live with it).

Well, at my school, I can only do a general undergrad degree in psychology, but I'm trying to get into grad school so I can get a graduate degree in health/social psychology.

For one, I don't think it'd be easy to find a job if you only get a BA (or a BSc, for that matter), so I think you'd at LEAST need to get an MA (or MSc). Personally, I'd like to be a professor, and an experimental psychologist, but with a social/health psychology background, you can also be a consultant, work for a particular firm, or just find some sort of application of the field to the real world, because I believe that the ultimate purpose of any psychology theory/paradigm is to apply itself to the real world. I used to think "ewwww..experimental psychologist! so lame!" but..the more I learn, the more I want to actually find out about things, and the more I want to actually do experiments, so.. yeah, that's where I am now! =D

AniLAttacK: If your school gives you AP Psychology and you're thinking about taking psychology in college, just know that it won't count as college credit... even if you get a 5 on the test. why? i dont really know, the collegeboard just made it like that. soo best bet is to just take the psychology class at a nearby community college or if they give you college classes at school take those. (:
