i'm sure everyone knows the 360 was launched early this morning and in a interview with Brian Lee, financial chief of Microsoft (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/9968123) said they were aiming for 3 million sales in the first 3 months. how do you think it will go? 3 million is pretty ambitious considering the high cost and PS3 and Revolution looming in the distance, despite it being holiday season.

i think it's bad business sense for microsoft to launch this early before sony or nintendo. sure, xbox 360 will have it's time in the limelight for a few months but when the PS3 comes out closely followed by the Revolution, the hype for the 360 will die pretty fast as everyone is rushing to get sony (has the best selection of popular franchises and best games IMO) and nintendo's (free online wifi access and dowload of classic games) next gen consoles. the 360 won't be fresh in everyone's mind anymore and ultimately get pwned and become obsolete. i think microsoft should've waited until closer to the launch of the other two systems.

agree? disagree? discuss!!

no, video games can also be discussed here...

I think its a good move by microsoft... by releasing the 360 at this time, they can gain an advantage over Sony and Nintendo... That is to establish the 360 by the time PS3 and Revolution make their releases... By the time those other systems are released, the 360 should have a somewhat decent library of games from (1st and 3rd party companies) and trusted consumers while the other parties still have a small amount of games available mostly from 1st party companies... That was the advantage Sony had with the PS2 during the current console generation... The PS2 while inferior to the X-Box in terms of system capabilities, had its dominance over X-Box and Gamecube because of its wide selection of games where as X-Box and Gamecube's selection of games paled in comparison... Online console gaming is also becoming very big now... X-Box has established a great online community with X-Box LIVE, despite the fact that there is a fee for it... That is something that Sony has been able to achieve... Nintendo is starting up with its Wi-Fi connection and perhaps Sony will come along as well... I still do not think that Nintendo and Sony can beat Microsoft when it comes to online gaming...

The hype for EVERY system dies out... It happened with every system in the current console gen... The X-Box did great over here and I dont see why the X-Box 360 would fail in such a period of time... Perhaps in Japan it won't be as great, but over here in the States, I think it will do great... Now if the Dead or Alive series were to not be X-Box exclusvie anymore, then I would see X-Box 360 taking a big hit since that is one of the system's most popular games...

Personally, I think the PS3 is overhyped and people are putting WAY too much confidence into it... Sony seems to be getting a little cocky when it comes to the console and i think that can really bite them in the ass later on... Microsoft and Nintendo still seem to be the underdogs in the nextgen console war, but they should not be underestimated at all... that would be a huge mistake by Sony...

what good will it bring to release 3 consoles at the same time???
microsoft was smart to release the xbox360 during the holiday season,
they will have one year head start, by the time ps3 is released,
xbox will be cheaper, have much more array of games,
and the second wave of games will be utilizing the full potential of the xbox360.
when ppl sees that ps3 and xbox2 have abilities that are almost the same,
what do u think they will choose?
by now, all of the xboxes have been sold, you could go and look, i swear u wont find any.

ah yes, but define success. although microsoft has a strong following in the states, it is weak in japan and the PAL areas, and microsoft is losing money on xbox. i don't believe they've yet made a profit. they're hoping to turn things around with the 360. even with a good line-up of games so far to the holiday release, i don't think they'll release many more great quality games before the other consoles come out. i would think they'd put out THE best games they've got at launch and before the holidays (to cash in on the fresh hype), so all games coming afterward will not be as great.

i'm not saying it will fail but it will lag in the console war, even behind nintendo. i like to use the analogy of Toy Story. Woody(360) came out before Buzz(PS3 and Rev) and everyone loved Woody but when Buzz came out the kid almost completely forgot his hype over Woody and put all his energy into Buzz. that's how i think it will be when the other consoles come out.

sony overhypes all their consoles and practically BS's us with information and specs all the time, but what do they care? they have the most third party support and best games like final fantasy and dragon quest (that come to mind right away). more people are going to buy the ps3 than any other console so sony is going to get a lot of support, maybe enough to single-handedly overwhelm 360.

the rev on the otherhand, is pretty mysterious. they're going to have a big fanbase for the classics and seem to be getting massive support from leading developers in japan (but who actually will produce games for the rev, we'll have to wait and see). i think nintendo will do very well, better than 360, but that remains to be seen. nintendo's still hiding a lot of things from us.

yeah i've been hearing there's a lot of shortages reported everywhere, but i guarantee that by the end of the week, there will be 360 stacked to the ceiling. all this shortage crap is stupid. you KNOW microsoft made plenty considering they're aiming for 3 mil in 3 months, they're just delaying the shipping to get more hype.

hmmm it is a good time to release and by releasing they're product before there competition shows how confident microsoft is with 360. so i think in 3 months 3 million is going to be easy for microsoft. however i wouldnt purchase one because im addicted to mario kart on ds. XD

3 million is a very modest number imo,

this is the holiday season, and the xbox is the only next gen console out at the moment... selling 3 million will be a breeze.

3 million units in 3 months is a very ambitious goal that will not be met.

They're all sold not because of huge demand but because of production shortages. As for the 360 being cheaper by the time PS3 and Revolution comes out, that's debateable. Why? In one year's time, fabrication techniques won't just be cheaper for Microsoft, it'll be cheaper for Sony and Nintendo as well. In terms of games, reports have it that the PS3 will be launching with MGS4, Warhawk, GT5, and Tekken. That about blows away the 360's launch lineup and anything they come up with in a year's time.

Another important factor is the ridiculously huge Japanese support that PS3 has, even moreso than the PS2(which was behind its success).

Next up, 90 million PS2 owners aren't all going to rush out and buy a 360 and abandon the PS3.

Next, almost 100% backwards compatability right out of the box. I don't really care for BC but it's an important feature apparently. Xbox360's BC is too much of a nuisance.

Next, free Blu-Ray DVD player. You scoff now but that's only because you're closed minded. A major driving force behind the PS2's success was the free DVD player and it'll be the same now.

Next, technical specs that match or exceed the 360 at the same cost. Fortune reported that a Sony rep stated that it would sell at a loss initially at a price-point of $300-$400 USD.

Microsoft definitely made the right move by launching early because they can get more of their systems in homes but at the end of the day, they're market position won't be that much different from this generation. And if I was an Xbox owner, I'd be pretty wary of the 360 from the get-go as Microsoft abandoned the Xbox pretty damn quickly and you can count on 1 hand minus 2 fingers and a thumb that completely took advantage of the hardware and pushed it to its limits. AAA PS2 titles are still on the horizon while the Xbox is all but dead already.

PS3 - market leader
Xbox360 - same share as Xbox + half of Nintendo's current market share
Revolution - half of Gamecube's market

5 years is a pretty long run for the xbox...
xbox was the stepping stone for microsoft, this time around things will be different for sure.
so if sony can afford to subsidize ps3 into $400 range, dont u think ms will be able to match that? my guess, $300 for the premium, $200 for the core when ps3 is here.
as for the sony's launch titles, im sure ms can match those with splinter cell, elder's scroll, forza2, and killer instinct?... not to mention gears of war, halo3 anyone?
bd player, bill gates himself said they might release xbox with hd drive if the market is ready..

That same analogy could be applied to the PS2(Woody), X-Box, and Gamecube(both Buzz), but PS2 still had more success despite it being older. It doesn't really work since that can work both ways...

I find interesting that you list PS3's games and say their launch titles will be better anything X-Box comes up with in a year without listing any X-Box titles...

Perfect Dark Zero, Quake 4, and Kameo are on the tops of their list... Dead or Alive 4 which comes out around december easily gives Tekken a run for its money and can easily take the #1 spot in video game sales... Dead or Alive 3 did that and that game is what appeals to Japanese players. Unless someone shows me that Tekken has sold better than a rival DOA game, I believe that DOA is now the better of the two... Elder Scrolls is an up coming RPG series widely known to X-Box and PC users, and its latest installment, Oblivion will undoubtedly be a great game.

It hasn't been mentioned yet, but I think Final Fantasy is about ready to go its grave. From what I hear from all my gamer friends, FFXII is complete crap and does not even have the feel of a true Final Fantasy. If FFXII turns out to be crap, but then I will have no hope for it during the next generation... This series took a dive after X-2's release...

Although I won't be getting a 360 this holiday season, I will be looking forward to Dead or Alive 4 and Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, which is just an absolutely stunning game.

Bill Gates said they expect to sell 3 million units in 90 days or something like that.
Anyway the 360 will probally do atleast 2 million in that time. Has anyone in this dull
"Message Board" Even played the 360? = Doubtful.

Edit:

Okay, I think a lot of people are missing the point here. The 360 is next gen because it is capable of delivering a PC quality visual experience and unmatched gaming experience on a TV. I have seen so much hate towards the 360 because its only as nice as a high end pc...which is why its next gen. Tell me the last time you could play PC quality games on a console?

Never... the only system that even came close to that was indeed X-Box...

i'm not bashing the 360. i'm simply saying that if in fact the game line-up for the 360 can rival that of the PS3, then it would be better business sense to release it sometime near the release of the PS3. if the 360 games are really better, then microsoft will gain a strong foothold in the "console war." i just think they're too early with 2 juggernauts and an array of more famous and popular games coming around the corner that the 360 flame might get snuffed out.

I think it's a good move. It's pretty stupid to put up a fight against Nintendo or Sony. I dont think 360 is that expensive anyways. I think its selling for $500 bucks CDN with the hard drive. I bought PS2 when it first came out in its first month. Cost $500 bucks too and the next week...price dropped to $400..I got ripped -.-

I'm still not sure what to get. 360 or a PS3..I'll have to compare the graphics between the two first and i'll make a choice

Now now, why buy XBOX 360 if you have a high-end rig that is capable of playing almost all the line-up games that XBOX 360 has? The latest video card has better graphics or is on-par with XBOX 360, to the consumers, its a HUGE waste of money to buy XBOX right now. Buy the time the price goes down for XBOX, the PS3 and Rev will be out.

I doubt Microsoft can sell 3 million units of these when the systems at launch were found defective.
