My hometown Chargers played a laugher of a game against the Raiders on the tail end of the MNF doubleheader last night. I don't know if the Chargers were that good or the Raiders were that bad. I guess it would be safe to say that it was a little bit of both. But boy, did Oakland look disorganized last night. Very, very embarrassing for them and their fans to start off the season like that - and in front of a national audience, no less.
I'm encouraged by the way the Chargers defense performed. 8 sacks, 3 by Shawne Merriman alone. Outstanding. And the much maligned secondary was able to keep Randy Moss in check most of the time. Can't say, playing against the Raider defense, we could get a good read at how well Philip Rivers is going to be in the passing game - because San Diego pretty much pounded the ball with LT and MT most of the night. But on the few occasions that he did pass, Rivers made a few good throws. The big thing is, the kid is not the kind of player that will make too many mistakes and I don't think he'll be put in too many situations where he might make any. I suspect that if Schottenheimer and the coaching staff play their cards right, they can wean Rivers along in his development, much the same way Cowher and the Steelers did with Roethlisberger. Rivers has a plethora of talent and a great supporting cast around him. Like Big Ben, he doesn't have to personally carry the team to win games.
I feel bad for feeling bad for the Raiders last night.
I too have great expectations for Rivers. He was the best QB from "the best QB" draft, IMO.
Thank you ESPN for switching gears from TO Soap Network to the Manning Soap Network.

Three teams got shut down at their home.
A lot scored 19 too... I don't know what that means.
