Hajimemashite! Watashiwa Trung desu. Watashiwa Betnamjin desu.

Just out of curiosity (and I know it has been asked before), does anybody know how I can type Japanese characters (all of them) on web browsers and other programs, specifically for Mac OSX?

Go to System Preferences -> International and set up the Japanese type function. It should work for all programs.

I would like to practice my Japanese on MSN/AIM as well. I think a bunch of us who wants to practice our Japanese should list their AIM or MSN, and then we'll start contacting each other and hopefully practice our Japanese. Who knows, perhaps once a week, we can gather together in a group chat and converse there as well.

My AIM is KrayZier777, and my MSN is KrayZier777@hotmail.com

What you were saing.. ㄱ + ㅏ + ㅇ, is not how it is. It's by syllables (hiragana/katakana) and then there is 한자 (kanji), which you have to know how to pronounce by.. constantly studying..

for example:
가 나 다 라 마 바 사
が な だ ら ま ば さ
고 노 도 로 모 보 소
ご の ど ろ も ぼ そ
and others..

There are two ways to read kanji. One's by itself, the other is when it's attached to another kanji.
example would be:
中. it's either, naka (나카, なか) or chuu (츄우, ちゅう)
naka is when it's by itself, chuu is when it's attached to another kanji (中心, chuushin).

I think this is the simplest way to explain. I'm sure Tamago86 or orangecake or someone can explain in more detailed for you^^

Unlike Korean Japanese hiragana and katakana (2 of the 3 scripts used) is almost completely phonetical, everything is pronounced as it's written no matter where it is in the sentence
Kanji is a different story though like dr jung pointed out

So Tamago86, do you still study Japanese? like. memorize new Kanji, and reuse whatever you know.
For me, although I would still know what it means and remember the pronounciation, it's so easy to forget how to write one when I don't use it for awhile. Agreed? Haha =X

Yeah that's true for anything. I stopped using English as my primary language while living in Japan and now in Hong Kong. Whenever I talk to people, I can't think of the right word as easily. And Kanji, ahh don't get me started. Some of the more complicated or rare ones get lost like that --

yep if you don't use it you lose it...well once you get to an advanced level you'll probably never forget things below intermediate level, and you won't need to study as much to retain it either..You'll notice beginning language courses in college like at the 100 and 200 level meet almost every day, ones at 300 level may meet every other day, and ones at 400+ level may only meet once a week, because a classroom can only teach you so much. Anyways yea I still learn new kanji once in awhile, because I read books and newspapers, but the majority of the time it's just new vocab that uses kanji I already know ..It's like how we could still learn new words by reading books too in English. Japanese books tend to have really random kanji you might only see once in a blue moon though or funny usages of common ones to make it more artistic

And for writing kanji, unless you don't use Japanese for an extremely long time remembering ones you have already cemented in your brain shouldn't be too hard. I wouldn't blame you if you didn't know / remember how to write things like 薔薇 (bara - rose) though

You mention leveled courses. Where do you take your advanced Japanese courses? I'm currently taking the beginners course at Boston Language Institute (you've probably seen their ads all over the T), and while I'm sort of optimistic about how much I'll learn, I've come to the realization that I may have to go to a difference school to become fluent in speaking, listening, reading, and writing.

I know Harvard teaches several level of courses, and I was contemplating taking courses there (for both Japanese and Vietnamese for sometime in the future). However, I'm not even sure if I'm allowed to register for that course at Harvard. Any suggestions?
