Hi, can someone translate "Don't be sad" for me.
I used a translator and it gave me "悲しくなかったら"
but I wasn't sure if it was right b/c translators tend to be inaccurate.

and
"ほんとに...ほんとに...かなしいよ.."
^ This means I'm really really sad right?

Don't be sad
落ち込まないで
ochikomanai de

and yes that means really really sad

how do you say 'I must study hard'? and how do you conjugate must w/ verbs?

There are so many ways to say you have to do something, haha..

1) Formal-ish "I have to study" This one implies something bad will happen if you don't do X
勉強しなくてはならない
benkyou shinakute wa naranai
勉強しなくてはいけない
benkyou shinakute wa ikenai
勉強しなくてはだめ
benkyou shinakute wa dame

3) Less formali-ish "I have to study", this one is the same as above only less formal
勉強しなくちゃならない
benkyou shinakucha naranai
勉強しなくちゃいけない
benkyou shinakucha ikenai
勉強しなくちゃだめ
benkyou shinakucha dame

3) Formal-ish "I have to study" this has no implication that something bad will happen if you don't, it's just you have to do it
勉強しなければならない
benkyou shinakereba naranai
勉強しなければいけない
benkyou shinakereba ikenai
勉強しなければだめ
benkyou shinakereba dame

4)Less formal-ish "I have to study" Less formal version of the one above
勉強しなきゃならない
benkyou shinakya naranai
勉強しなきゃいけない
benkyou shinakya ikenai
勉強しなきゃだめ
benkyou shinakya dame

5) Very informal ways to say "I have to study"
勉強しないと
benkyou shinai to
勉強しなきゃ
benkyou shinakya
勉強しなくちゃ
benkyou shinakucha

(the last two is just a shortened version of the ones above) I would suggest just using 勉強しなきゃならない, not too formal and not too informal sounding. It literally means if I don't study then that's bad / won't do.

Conjugation depends on which you're using, but you take the negative (for example する -> しない), take off the い and add the 'must' ending, either くては、きゃ、or くちゃ. Then add either ならない、いけない, or だめ

する -> しない -> しな -> しなきゃ -> しなきゃだめ
買う -> 買わない -> 買わな -> 買わなくちゃ -> 買わなくちゃならない
見る -> 見ない -> 見な -> 見なくては -> 見なくてはいけない

Once you practice them enough they'll come naturally

God, I swear Japanese are way harder to learn than Hangeul.
This makes my brain spin around with one table of Hiragana.
O.O I'll be needing this tutorial soon, thanks for sharing <3

I was wondering if it's possible to write my name in Japanese. My name is Anthony. If possible could I get it in Kanji, Hiragana and Katakana.

i think it would be アントニ?

you normally don't write names in hiragana. :)

I have so much trouble trying to memorize and learn various kanji..
I'm still stumped on how people know so many, all the ones that fill up nearly the whole character space look nuts.

I have a lot of trouble too, but since i know chinese it simplifies it a little.
Those people know so many because they've been learning it all their life or they're just super geniouses.
*a little tip* reading song lyrics helps alot..it's helped me.xD

They are two different things.
Katakana is usually used for foreign words. smile.gif

nevermind =
いや、別に (iya, betsu ni)
or
何でもない (nandemonai)

nothing much really depends on the context...there's no one translation from english to japanese that will work in all situations
what did you do on the weekends?
nothing much = 何も (nani mo)
or
何もしなかった (nani mo shinakatta)
あんまり何もしなかった (anmari nanimo shinakatta)
別に何もしなかった (betsu ni nanimo shinakatta)

hiragana = script for native japanese words, all kanji can be written in in hiragana, and the verb and adjective endings are always in hiragana

katakana = used for foreign words, words of foreign origin, foreign names, onomatopoeia
when used online it's similar to typing in caps. like おはよう = good morning and オハヨウ = GOOD MORNING!

You don't have to learn both of it. It's better if you do though.
If you know hiragana though, you'll get through just fine.

I don't know who you mean by "they", but most people learn all of it.
Yes, but it's also more than that. It's also used for foreign words.
ie: waffle, coffee, etc.
edit: nvm..i haven't used it in a while so i forgot. sorry! :x

yes you have to learn both of them. Katakana makes up 20-30% of all Japanese words. Learning just hiragana isn't enough, you need to learn hiragana katakana and kanji, period. And yes Japanese learn all three, if they didn't they wouldn't even be able to read at an elementary school level
