What kanji?

う~ん。
日本では Merry Christmas を漢字で書くことはめったにないねえ・・・。
強いて言えば、「祝、降誕祭」「降誕祭おめでとう」かなあ・・・。
教会の会報とかには、書いてあるのを見たことある。
でもやはり、普通は「メリークリスマス」ってカタカナで書くよ。

あ、そうですね。時々に見たんですけれども。。メリークリストマスは教会やデパートや何々ところに見るよ。
メリークリスマスも大丈夫だよ!Hehe..

I think what Kaname(orangecake) was trying to say a few posts up is that お大事に is usually only used when the person is sick or has a cold, it's like saying "feel better soon!" or "get well soon". So what you should say is 風邪とかひかないように、気をつけて (ie telling them to not catch a cold opposed to telling them to take care of themselves because they already have one)

QUOTE

be safe and try not to get sick

これは、メールの最後の挨拶かなあ・・・。
だったらば。

友だちに・・・・・「元気でね!」「風邪なんかひかないように、気をつけてね!」(女の子ver.)
         「元気で!」「風邪とかひかないように、気をつけて!」(男の子ver.)
目上の人に・・「どうか、お元気で」「どうぞ、お体ご自愛ください。」(どうぞ、 お からだ ご じあい ください。)

Translation:

"Be safe and try not to get sick"

This is a saying usually used at the end of emails and such.

To a friend: 「元気でね!」 or 「風邪なんかひかないように、気をつけてね!」 (FEMININE VERSION)
「元気で!」 or 「風邪とかひかないように、気をつけて!」 (MASCULINE VERSION)

To people of higher status than you: 「どうか、お元気で」 or 「どうぞ、お体ご自愛ください。」

Lynn、関空から帰るんだ~。
「大阪城」に「なんでやねん」・・・こってこてやねえ。 laugh.gif

Pssht..the JLPT test is a joke, only Japan would create a test that doesn't actually test the most important part of a language: speaking! Remind me again why Japanese can hardly do even basic greetings after a decade of English classes rolleyes.gif
But anyways, I think you're around if not alittle bit above the 2kyuu level, the most important thing on the test is kanji and grammar, so if you have those down then you're golden. What qualifications do they request of a CIR anyways? I don't know why they think time in Japan correlates to general knowledge or Japanese prowess anyways, there are people who have been here 10 years who still can't speak the language, and it's not because they're uncapable it's because they don't give two sh!ts, and I know some JETs who aren't any different. In fact when I was studying Japanese at Cornell we had the admission board for JET come visit us (they were in New York to interview JET applicants). I asked which would be more important, actual Japanese language prowess (ie being able to speak) or something like a JLPT certificate which only shows ability in reading and grammar. I was a tad dissapointed when they claimed to not know the difference, as in they didn't know that someone could take the 2kyuu or even 1kyuu and not be able to actually speak Japanese. (it was quite funny though, I got one of them sweating biggrin.gif)

Anyways..Good luck and fight the system wink.gif

laugh.gif

群雄割拠時代が分かると思う。。たくさん良いアーティストがいるね。
Haha..有名な曲(でもアーティストが知らない)がたくさんあるね。
あ~そう。浜崎あゆみはオリコンチャーツのNo.1アーティストだと思う(最近に見なかった。。)。彼女はたくさんシングルとアルバムがあるよ!彼女は愛・地球博のライブコンサートを見た。

オレンジレンジの『ロコローション』と言う曲が好きだよ! でも、倖田来未は有名のことが聞かなかった。面白いですね。

Rare
珍しい mezurashii
or
めったにない metta ni nai

Examples:

珍しい

オーストラリアには珍しい動物がいます
oosutoraria ni wa mezurashii doubutsu ga imasu
There are rare animals in Australia

ピカソのような画家は珍しい
pikaso no youna gaka wa mezurashii
Painters such as Picasso are rare

彼がそんな間違いをするのは珍しい
kare ga sonna machigai o suru no wa mezurashii
It is rare that he should make such a mistake.

めったにない

彼はめったに映画に行かない
kare wa metta ni eiga ni ikanai
He rarely goes to the movies

そこはめったに雨が降らない
soko wa metta ni ame ga furanai
It rarely / scarcely ever rains there

You actually probably won't see めったにない much, you should always use 珍しい instead, but I listed this because it pops up once and awhile and it's good to recognize what it means.

Extinct
絶滅
zetsumetsu

Examples:

絶滅は進化の一部である
zetsumetsu wa shinka no ichibu de aru
Extinction is part of evolution.

さまざまな種類の生物が絶滅しつつある
samazamana shurui no seibutsu ga zetsumetsu sitsutsuaru
Many forms of life are becoming extinct

いろいろな説はあるものの、恐竜がなぜ突然絶滅してしまったのかはまだ謎のままである
iroirona setsu wa aru monono, kyouryuu ga naze totsuzen zetsumetsu site shimatta no ka wa mada nazo no mama de aru
There are many theories about the sudden extinction of the dinosaurs, but the real cause still remains a mystery.

メリークリスマス! smile.gif smile.gif smile.gif

Every year, Some Japanese Students travel to our school, and it's awesome!

I remember learning only a few phrases in Japanese, and I would randomly shout them out when I see of Japanese guys walking by.

What's funny is I keep repeating,' I'M NOT GOOD!' ( In japanese, which I don't know how to write, something like, " Yokonadis " ? )

And they'd laugh and say something back, I'd pretend to understand of coruse, which I don't. LOLS and my Half japanese guy friend told me that I'd never become an Japanese Fob due to my height, and he actually told me I was too damed loud.

Gees, that nerve!

Anyways, yea, DISKEY JAPAN!!

( Bear with the incorrect japalish, I'm pretty sure there's no such thing called japlaish, but eh. You understand me <33 )

that was how the toefl used to be...all grammar/reading, no (or limited) speaking.
but now they have a speaking portion...and it's driving my japanese friend crazy laugh.gif

i took a practice 2kyuu test...and i think i got like 50% straight, except for the listening wink.gif
maybe if i was actually motivated to study for and take it...but i dunno.
and yeah...the kanji kicked my..*cough*...

the 'qualifications' make it sound like anyone who's taken japanese can become a cir.

something like ability to read & speak japanese...
on the app it's like "ppl with less than 3yrs japanese may find the job 'challenging'".

i think they just want to see it because it looks good (study abroad/2or1kyuu).
or maybe they think that that'll help with cultural understanding...?
but then again, you can't apply if you've lived in japan for more than 3 yrs or something like that...
and the interview itself has a spoken japanese component...

so....haha i'll see.
right now it's back to the 3rd yr book then going to the 4th yr book for review...and sailor moon dramas to top it all off laugh.gif

i think a lot about the JET process is a bit shady though... ie- they like suck ups (or so i hear).

*tries to fight the system* laugh.gif

メリークリスマス!僕の家族はプレセントのお金はAmerican Red Crossにくれるので、買い物を全々しなかったんです。
実は、プレセントがないので、ちょっと悲しいです。僕はお金をもらった方がきらいです。プレセントをくれるのが意味がある。でも、いつも良いプレセントを知らないので、プレセントを買った方が難しいですね。

ええ。。分からない! laugh.gif 本当に眠いですよ。今日は。。長かった。 お休みなさい!! メリークリスマス!
