Oh and does あなたに 会いたい mean I miss you or does it only mean I want to meet you?

Wouldn't you just say 私の日本語はほんとうに悪(わる)いです
but I guess if you wanted to use a slight curse then it'll be like 私の日本語はくそだ

Or is it purely memorization?
How long does it take to reach basic kanji skills? I can't read kanji at all...

It can mean both I want to meet you and I miss you..If it's a friend or someone you've met before then most likely it means I miss you..it's the same thing in Korean too (saying I want to see you for I miss you)
Or is it purely memorization?
Basically just memorization...I guess how long you take depends what you consider basic kanji..Most first year beginner Japanese college courses cover a few hundred. There is also something called jouyou ("common use") kanji which are all the kanji that the Japanese government says you need to learn to be able to survive in Japan, and there's 1945 of them (listed here if you want to see http://www.csse.monash.edu.au/~jwb/jouyoukanji.html ). I'd say a knowledge of 500-1000 will cover the basics, and depending how much you study and how apt you are at memorizing it could take anywhere from half a year to a year or more..took me around 4 years before I could read newspapers and books without a dictionary

Basically, there is a trick once you get some of the simple ones out of the way. I would say learning from context and learning the kanji to words you already know to be the most important.
