I have been taking beginner Japanese at my university since last September, and there is a Japanese Speech Contest coming up that I wish to participate in. Anyone know of a interesting topic that a beginner could do for the speech? If it is any help, my Japanese class uses the Nakama 1 textbook and we have covered the first 10 chapters.
So far my ideas include: talk about my family (私の家族), my university days (大学の時), etc. None of these seem very interesting but my limited vocabulary/skills with Japanese does not get me very far with more complicated topics/ideas.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks!
Beginner vocabulary seems to be mostly centered around either school, family, friends or hobbies. I suggest picking the one that you find most interesting, then posting it here for corrections.
I wouldn't experiment with vocabulary too much; it would be better to get it right than to try and experiment.

what is a [rough - if there's no literal] translation of datta? (is it past tense of datte?) how does it work in these following sentences:
ripping from a song lyrics:
boku no sekai subete datta
or from this:
ni-shuu-kan gurai byooki datta n desu.

datta is the plain past form of desu (it was)

but *scratches head* i don't get how it's used with the 2nd sentence:
ni-shuu-kan gurai byooki datta n desu <--- isn't that repetitive? [not my sentence. it was from my sensee's answer key

ndesu is usually used when you give a reason. So bring sick for 2 weeks may be a reason for missing class or something.

puwahaha.. you made me laugh a little...
there is no symplified letters in Japanese. therefore only 愛 is love.
not the other one with 友 in lower half. lol
