Yeah I took 3-kyu last year. I bought a couple practice books that were really helpful. I passed but with a really bad score (although your score doesn't matter, as long as you passed).

It's also read as konnichiwa. 間違いやすいだろう。
Mind giving me examples of native Japanese speakers using 「今日は」as "Good afternoon" instead of today?
One site translated it as "Today".
I.e.
今日は
【副】
today
Source: http://eow.alc.co.jp/%e4%bb%8a%e6%97%a5%e3...f/UTF-8/?ref=sa
Another as like you said translated it as "good afternoon"
1. こんにちは【今日は】別ウィンドウで表示
〔午前中に〕Good morning!; 〔午後に〕Good afternoon!; 〔親しい間で,午前・午後に関係なく〕Hello!/Hi!
Source: http://dic.yahoo.co.jp/dsearch?enc=UTF-8&a...e=0&dtype=2
I've only seen 今日は used as hello in online forums where foreign students are studying Japanese. (Up 'til then, I didn't realize they were saying "Hello". I thought they kept saying "Today.." It was quite irritating.) I've never seen an actual native Japanese speaker used it as hello.
To be on the safe side, just using the hiragana form of it, こんにちは, is better just to avoid confusion.

Hi cRoSsTaGe hisashiburi
This can also mean 'to bluff' or to pretend to be strong, to show off that you are strong. So in Chinese 逞强 might work, or 要强, 装硬汉, 装出表面勇敢, etc. hard to get an exact translation.
example: 弱い者に限って強がる ―> 惟有弱者偏爱逞强
強がる:
強いように見せかける。強いことを自慢する

Sometimes but rarely it can be read as konnichi in 今日は like Akira said, but there is another more common time 今日 is read as konnichi, and that is in a very formal sense, meaning like "these days", or like このごろ
今日ではテレビのない生活なんて想像できない
Today no one can imagine a life without television
今日では日本語を勉強する学生の数は昔ほどではありません
Less students study Japanese today than formerly
These are both read as こんにち
In the dictionary (広辞苑)
こんにち「今日」
1.きょう。この日。本日。「今日限りで開店いたします」
2.このごろ。現在。現代。 「苦難に耐えて今日の繁栄を築く」
And wow this thread is still alive, I'm surprised

オストラリアーの教育の方が日本の教育より まし。
Also, that the Japanese education system is very different to the Australian education system:
日本の教育制度はオーストラリアの教育制度に非常に異なっています。
