Patience and determination I guess.. I studied for a year on my own and with a private tutor..Then I spent another year at an intensive language program at Cornell, called FALCON, I highly recommend it to anyone that wants to become fluent fast. After that year at FALCON I was sent here to Japan, and I've been here ever since then (alittle over 7 months). I'd say what got me to the level I am now was the full year of FALCON coupled with coming straight here to Japan and applying everything I had learned. Also was invaluable to always have Japanese friends in America that would waste their time to put up with me and help me

Oh ok. Wow, that FALCON program sounds awesome. Sounds a lot better than our CLIP program here.




I gotta question. What does なんて　mean? For some reason, I get the feeling that it's sometimes used the same way as なんか. I tried asking my friend this once and he didn't really know either. Thanks.

It depends how it's used...the meaning will be different depending if it's used in front or used in the middle

When used in front it means "what a X"
なんてすばらしい光景だなぁ (nante subarashii koukei da naa) What a beautiful sight!
なんてばかだね (nante baka da ne) What an idiot!

There are sometimes where it's not used in front but still means this, you just have to tell by context.

The other なんて is hard to describe..It's like picking up on what someone else said..or most of the time it's just an informal way to connect sentences

人生なんて短い (jinsei nante mijikai)
Life is short

きみの悪口なんて決して言わなかった (kimi no waruguchi nante kessite iwanakatta)
Never did I say bad things about you

が海外へ行くなんて想像できない (kare ga kaigai e iku nante souzou dekinai)
I can hardly imagine him going abroad.

彼と一緒に働くなんて耐えられない (kare to issho ni hataraku nante taerarenai)
I can't bear to work with him.

すべて、鬼（厄） よけの風習です。

今日(2月3日)は節分です。

鬼は外!福は内!　今日は学校の終わりで学生たちは一斉に豆を先生に投げたw　かわいそう。。前に節分って一体何か知らなかったから友達から豆もらって「先生が教室に入ったら投げろ」って言った時にちょっと変だなぁと思ってw

実は本当の豆じゃなくてピイナッツだったけど。。まあいいや

なるほど。じゃあ、「なんか」っていうのはどういう意味?使い方がちょっと分かるけど。。。

ある程度で「なんて」と同じような使い方だけど、一番大きな違いの一つは「なんか」を動詞の連体形か終止形に従って入れることは珍しいと思うんだ。
例えば:「海外へ行くなんか想像できない」と「海外へ行くなんて想像できない」のどっちの方が自然かというと、たいていの場合には後者だろう。「なんか」は入れることは入れれるけども、「なんて」の方がいいし

そして、もう一つの大きな違いは「なんか」と「なんて」は文の最初に置くとどういう意味になるかってことです。
具体的に言うと、

「なんてばかだね」- What an idiot!
「なんかばかだね」- He's an idiot, or something..

この文脈じゃ「なんか」は「..or something」と訳される。

「なんか難しい問題にでもぶち当たったのか?」　"You've run into some trouble or something?"
「なんか寝る気がないのかい?」"You don't feel like sleeping or something?"

「なんて～」　は、　「what a X」。　～の部分を強調する時に使う。漢字を使って、「何て」と書くこともできる。
「～ なんて～」　は、前にくることばを否定的にとらえてる時に使う接続詞。だから後に来ることばは、否定的なことば。こっちは漢字を使えません。

「なんか～」　は、　「..or something」。　この場合、もともとの形は「なにか」。変形して「なんか」になってる。漢字で書いたら「何か」。
「～なんか～」　は、　「～なんて～」と同じ使い方。これまた同じく、漢字は使えません。

あなたなんて嫌い！
あなたなんか嫌い！

は、同じ意味。

ただ、「～なんて～」の方が、「～なんか～」より若干、格が上・・・と言えないこともない・・・ってくらいの差。
口語で「～なんて～」「～なんか～」は使うけど、本来、文語で「～なんか～」は使わない。


ふう。
ふだんなにも考えずに使ってることばをこんなに突き詰めて考えたの久しぶりだよ～。

あと、ひとつだけ。

ある夜Kolnの橋を自転車で渡ってたところに二人の気持ち悪いやつらに止められて「おい、金あるかい?くれ!」って命令したり押したりされちゃった。そのうち怒りっぽい父が追いついてきてあいつらを追い出したけどめっちゃくっちゃ怖かったんだ 俺はその時に13歳ぐらいだったもんだな。。だからドイツの印象はちょっと悪かった。。やっぱり日本の方がずっと安全だな、市内だって夜歩いてもいいし

Quick question about typing Japanese...

I have Windows XP right... and I know we XP users are meant to have automatic Japanese-Typing abilities by clicking some box in the control panel section... but unfortunately I don't have my Windows XP installation CD anymore.... so I can't install the program...

So is there any program I can download for Windows XP to let me type in Japanese? It sucks I don't get to practise...

ここ数年、日本のベストセラー本の影響で、
『30歳以上で、独身で、子どものいない女性』
のことを「負け犬」と呼ぶようになりました～。
これは、当事者が自分のことを冷静に自嘲しながら使うからこその言葉で、もしもあなたがこの条件にあう女性を「負け犬」と呼んだら、しゃれにならないので、要注意です。
強いて言うと、アメリカにおける、人種差別発言と同じくらい、しゃれにならないかな。

i'm totally reading make-inu articles for my class for next week!

speaking of that class, i need like...a catchword (injapanese yes) to report on...or catch phrase.

the class is 'keywords & concepts in japan', and i WAS going to do kan-ryuu but this other dude in class totally stole it from me...

examples would be:
'kan-ryuu'
'yasukuni jinja'
'make-inu'
'dankai sedai'
'shoshika'
etc...

what's a good word that's getting a lotta attention these days in japan?
i could do takeshima or something...but takeshima angers me...

Group I　(～る Ending):
食べる＞食べた

Replace る with た

Group II (~う sound ending):
思う＞思った
持つ＞持った
塗る＞塗った
Replace う sound syllable with った

飲む＞飲んだ
死ぬ＞死んだ
飛ぶ＞飛んだ
Replace う sound syllable with んだ

聞く＞聞いた
Replace く with いた

泳ぐ＞泳いだ
Replace ぐ with いだ

話す＞話した
Replace す with した

Generally, for the group II verbs, replace all う、つ、る ending verbs with った. For any む、ぬ、ぶ verbs, replace the ending syllable with んだ. Replace く、ぐ with いた and いだ respectively. Replace す with した.

Group III (来る、いる）
いる＞いた
来る＞来た（きた）
行く＞行った

Group III is for exceptions.

ハロー and thanks So what has enabled you to be able to skip a whole year of Japanese? I know what you mean by slow, in the very beginning I took classes at a nearby college to get credit for indepedent study on my high school transcript, and they spent like the whole year working on katakana, but then in another course they taught it to students in 3 days, haha.

Hmmm... basically what makes me eligable to skip a year of japanese is that

1. My class is slow, it takes us forever just to get through one chapter... like atleast 1 week per section
2. And it's really easy for me... I almost always get over 100% on my tests (my last final was so easy, I got 110% )

Yeah, but I don't really like the college "fast" approach... I mean, they don't spend enough time explaining things. I probably spent 2 months learning each alphabet, when it probably only should've taken a month for both at the most though...

Well, not sure if I can help but here's a little bit of insight. I started taking community college classes for Japanese when I was 11 and it wasn't difficult for JAPN1 (the class was full of high schoolers so they went at a high school-type pace but a bit faster). We'd learn hiragana in about 2 class sessions (6 hours) and katakana in the same amount of time (if not more). However, everybody was just getting a slight grasp on hiragana and katakana and strengthened reading skills as the class progressed. By the end, we all knew hiragana and katakana by heart, a couple 100 kanji, a ton of grammar and vocabulary, and even a bit of keigo (the class was about 3 months long; 2 classes per week; 3 hours per class). But then in JAPN2, it started speeding up and we'd learn a whole lesson in two weeks (grammar, vocabulary, etc; two classes a week for 2~ hours per class). I liked the approach of taking an entire year of high school Japanese in 3 months or so. If you don't mind a little studying here and there, listening to natives speaking, and doing grammar homework.. college is the choice for you. However, if you're struggling to finish homework as it is, maybe sticking with high school Japanese is the better choice.

If I'm not mistaken, FALCON starts from square 1.. meaning hiragana and katakana again. I'm sure they don't take long at all to master that (and I don't know what level of high school Japanese you are at), but - ok I forgot what I was going to say. Skip this part. I'm not too informed about FALCON's curriculum.

In high school Japanese, many of my friends told me that they learn things like communicating with teens, introducing to other young people, etc.. Unless you're planning on going to Japan during your youth (which may happen), you're better off learning more important vocabulary. Depends where you're planning on implementing your Japanese skills.. if it's in the future for business, maybe college classes would be better for you. If you're just into Japanese overall for all purposes, maybe FALCON is for you. You should make your purpose clear before you look in more for which classes to take.

Strange. It comes with XP software.. you don't need to install that.. but heck what do I know.

Try going to Control Panel > Date, Time, Language, and Regional Options > Regional and Language Options > Languages (tab) > Details (button) > Settings (tab) > Add (button).. and Japanese isn't under languages?
