Thanks again Tamago smile.gif

ok
i have another question >_<
I'm currently writing a speech for a speech contest...I'm talking about my job. I'm trying to say "you can practice Japanese" or "it allows me to practice Japanese"...but since there's no specefic thing allowing you to do the action, this isn't a causative pattern right? sleep.gif
And a few vocabulary words (i'm using these to describe my co-workers XD):
energetic
talkative
anal (I hate to use that word but I can't think of anything else laugh.gif)
worrysome
clumsy (or "blonde")
to train someone

If you want to say you can practice your Japanese at work you could say
"仕事場で日本語の練習も出来ます" (shigotoba de nihongo no renshuu mo dekimasu)

These are all な adjectives, as in you can add a な on the end and then put 人 (hito) and it would mean energetic person, talkative person, etc.
energetic = 元気 (genki)
talkative = しゃべり (shaberi)
anal = 神経質 (shinkeisitsu)
worrysome = 不安 (fuan)
clumsy = 不器用 (fukiyou)
to train someone = Depends on the context..but either 教える (oshieru) or 鍛える (kitaeru)

3. Humble expressions

1. You use honorific language with people older than you that you don't know, or people of much higher social status than you. You do not use it with people younger than you, friends, family, or people close to you. Finally you may never ever use honorific language when talking about yourself, or someone close to you!!

2. Being extra-modest in Japanese is more of a skill than it is an expression..Basically if someone compliments you, such as on your Japanese or on one of your abilities, you're supposed to deny it and say something like "ieie" (no no), "sonna koto arimasen yo" (It's not like that) or "oseji jouzu" (your flattery is impressive). So if someone said to you "nihongo ga jouzu desu ne" (your Japanese is really good) you should say "iie"

3. Humble is used in times when you must lower yourself to another person, it's often used with the honorific language as well to create a double honor effect. You should use it with people of a higher social standing than you. You can only use it when talking about yourself or people close to you, you can never ever use it to refer to someone else.

これは、私が答えるよ!

JRだとね~26時間くらいかな~。
飛行機だと、1時間30分。

ちなみに、運賃はほぼ同額。 sweatingbullets.gif

というわけで、JRでこの区間を移動する人はあまりいないよ。
もちろん、期間限定の激安チケットを手に入れることができたら、JRの方が安くなるけどね。 laugh.gif

hot dang! 26 hours -.-

and ur right, im thinking of using the JR line just because its cheaper laugh.gif

but i dont know if i would last 26 hours in a train though -.-

Hey! I'm glad you came again. I can also read English one way or another but since I can't write it I'll have to use Japanese, sorry...I was happy that we were able to talk about NEW S together. "You & J" really is an odd name isn't it, lol. Which country is Mr.D from? So I'm guessing Johnnys is really popular over there?
Come back over here again sometime if you want!

I'm kind of worried.... I've learned Japanese for 4 years in high school. But when I entered college, I couldn't continue to take Japanese cuz it didn't fit my schedule. But I'm gonna start again my sophomore year.... I'm kind of worried that I forgot a lot, which I'm sure I did. AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHhhhh. I used to be #1 in my class, I don't want to be #1 from the bottom.. T_________T

Okay, that came out to be a venting message . sleep.gif;
Gomen.

Haha that's ok..If you need help reviewing your Japanese just post here...But just so you know even though people take 3-4 years of a language in high school they still usually get placed in the 101 class in college, because college language courses are much more thorough and harder than high schol. I doubt you'll be number one from the bottom, and if you can read / write Chinese you already have a fairly large advantage over most of the kids.

空 (sora) = sky
白海 (shiroumi) or (hakukai) = white ocean
If you just want to say 'white ocean' you can say shiroumi, but hakukai in Japanese is the name of a place in northwestern Russia.

I don't know if it's the absolutely worse thing you could do, but I wouldn't recommend it. phew.gif Anime usually uses speech patterns that aren't normally used in everyday speech, so yeah.

NAN, when your advisor said Japanese 3, did he mean the third year of Japanese? If it was me, I would go ahead and take maybe the 2nd year. I'm not sure how good your teachers were in highschool, but I would take the second year level just to be on the safe side. I like to keep my GPA in a good range, but that's just me. sweatingbullets.gif Best of luck to you!

^ Thanks! But I think they only offere Japanese 1 and Japanese 3 for fall semesters and Japanese 2 and Japanese 4 for winter/spring semester. ><; But I think I will be okay. My Japanese teacher in high school was a native Japanese, and she was a reeeeeeeeeeeally difficult teacher. I'm just worried that I forgot too much. I guess it's time to start reviewing notes and old tests. ^^;

Oh, bw, can anyone reccomend me a good, cheap (or reasonably priced) 電子辞書? I've been wanting to buy one for a while...which brands are good (for those who have one)? Our student teacher now has a Seiko one..but she says it's really junk.

Hmm I see, therefore Japanese 1 and 2 at your school are actually the first and second semesters of first year Japanese, and 3 and 4 are semesters of 2nd year Japanese. So if you're going into Japanese 3 that means basically first semester of Japanese 202? That's probably a good level to start at for someone with 4 years of high school Japanese. Your actual level will determined by a placement exam you'll be given before classes start though.

The problem with high school courses is they mainly focus on vocabularly and grammar. University courses put quite alot of focus on the speaking, and the placement test usually includes an oral exam, which is why alot of people don't do well on it.

A good & cheap 電子辞書? Can't have both in the same one, haha.. The wordtanks made by Canon are the best, but aren't that cheap. Mine has Japanese to English, English to Japanese, English to English, a few Japanese dictionaries, kotowaza & 4 letter idiom dictionary, Chinese to English / English to Chinese, Chinese to Japanese / Japanese to Chinese, and pronounces the Chinese for you, all in one tiny 電子辞書...I can't remember the price but it didn't go over $350, you could probably find it for like around $250 on ebay. I think it's recommended that you have intermediate level Japanese before using a canon dictionary, because the primary language of the dictionary itself is Japanese, so although when you do something like Japanese to English it will give you the equivalent, the explanation will be in Japanese.

For example if you looked up できる in my dictionary part of the entry reads:
出来る
1「準備が」
ready
「叙述」(・・する/・・の)用意ができた(to do / for); (・・の)覚悟ができてる (for)
食事の用意ができました
Dinner's ready

Additionally if you look something up in the Japanese - Japanese part of the dictionary the definitions will be in Japanese.

So you're Hong Kong Chinese... I'm surprised you were looking at my blog from America. I guess Johnnys' hasn't quite made it's way into America yet has it? I hear Tackey is going to appear in a Jackie Chan movie..I wonder how popular that will be. Yea everyone is anxious about Uchi-kun's return. Personally I think he'll be coming back after his birthday but who knows..I want him to come back as soon as possible!

umm my dictionary is in Japanese like I said, because the dictionary is made by Japanese companies not American..that's why I said you needed intermediate Japanese to use it. And my dictionary is quite pretty thank you and no English menus here phew.gif
