whats the difference between hikari and raito? dont they both mean light?
ライト (raito) is more like electricity and light switches. On the other hand, 光 is like natural light.
For example:
光 (hikari): 光は音よりも速く進む - Light travels faster than sound.
ライト (raito): 私はライトを消した - I turned off the light.
However, instead of ライト, I prefer to use 電気 (denki), as in electricity. Even so, both are acceptable.
I downloaded a japanese album, but everything's protected by a password. It redirects me to this URL:

A member on Soompi (flikflak) needs some help regarding Japanese culture:
If it's possible, can U send me some web about Japanese culture in English. And if U don't mind, plz tell me anything U know about Japanese culture. Do U know the slogan that Japanese youth use to help develop this country . It's like : keep up with the Western. be equal the Western and pass over the Western (I translate it from my language so I don't know if it's exactly bit that's its meaning phew.gif ). Anything that U know about that and that period that japnese use them?
I think that I can do some research via Internet but I don't know Japanese so it's quite limited.
I hope that U can help me. Please respond as soon as possible. At best before 1/5.
Unfortunately, I'm not an expert in the culture besides the modern-day Japanese. If you can help flikflak out, that'd be great (I hope you're okay with me posting this...). Feel free to post what you have to offer here or PM flikflak directly. Thanks a lot!

I've been learning Japanese for three years and currently my fourth year, since year 7. I reckon most people would be pretty fluent after that many years, but I guess we don't spend enough time learning it at our school.
Anyoo, I have a very limited vocab of kanji, and I had a brief read through a few pages... I was wondering....

Alot of the times like in my post I put the romaji equivalent, but if I don't then you're just going to have to look it up. Copy and paste the kanji into here
http://www.csse.monash.edu.au/cgi-bin/cgiwrap/jwb/wwwjdic?1C
It's the only way you'll learn them
And don't worry most people aren't even close to fluent after 4 or so years of Japanese study. It's the hardest language in the world for a reason ya know, plus high schools don't really teach languages, it's more of an introduction to the culture in general.
So where in Japan are you going to?
Well if your parents think biggest language = better then why don't they want you to learn Mandarin? Spanish may be widely spoken but as a language of business and commerce it's waaay behind things like Japanese, French, German, even behind Korean I would say. There are just so many people that study Spanish, and so many people that can speak both Spanish and English that it's not really worth learning if you want to make money with it. Besides if you compare the Mexican or Spanish economy to Japan it won't even be on the radar, because Japan has the 2nd largest economy in the world. So yea..for making money Japanese > Spanish. However if you never plan to use Japanese in a job and plan to live in the US for the rest of your life then Spanish is better.

Good to know your speech went well. Sorry that you didn't win
About ryokans... I've been to quite a few myself (in Hakone, Takayama, and Kyoto) and they were a bit more expensive than the average. According to japan-guide.com, "Typical rates for ryokan range between 6,000 and 20,000 Yen per night and person, but some no-frills establishments offer rooms for less."
I got rooms in Hakone (Washintei Hougetsu) for 35000 Yen per person per night. This included the onsen (of course), a rather spacious tatami room (biggest in the ryokan), and multiple course meals for dinner and breakfast. It has a nice view of Lake Ashi and Mt. Fuji in the background (haha you know how every onsen in Japan has posters of Mt. Fuji). It's not a cheap ryokan.. but they don't speak English. You can check out their website: hakone-hougetu.com. This is my favorite ryokan... by far.

I went to Japan for 2 weeks recently and left with a Japanese boyfriend.
I write emails and letters to him but sometimes I don't think he understands. I'm sure he uses a online translator because his grammar and sentence structure is pretty weird. I would like to keep this relationship and I'm very aware of the outcomes of long distance relationships.
Can any Soompi member help me? Let's feel the love
