That is a shame; I so would've dropped every thing or at least make room in my schedule for some gaming (and kicking your butt tongue.gif)

the living room - we just moved in

w00t.gif Love the furnitures, flooring, and the view. Is the view included in the rent? Awesome flat.

What a fun thread! I moved to Silicon Valley recently and I needed to buy new furniture for my new apartment. I'm a bit of a cheapskate so I bought exclusively from Walmart and IKEA. Here some pictures:

$20 TV Stand from Walmart. 32 inch HDTV from Viewsonic - PC Connection $620

$180 Wood Futon from IKEA

$75 Computer Desk from IKEA

lol the stuffed animals are my gf's idea. I hope to sell them on EBAY soon. rofl

The TV is a Toshiba 56" DLP Projection HDTV. Have underneath, my Xbox 360, Up-Converting Region Free DVD player, Digital Cable Box, Kenwood Reciever, PS2, and Pioneer 25 Disc changer. The Speakers are Sony.

Oh, on top of the TV is my XBox Live Vision Cam. biggrin.gif

Well back to gaming. tongue.gif

Hmm, just out of curiosity G-Nitro where did you get the region free DVD player?

XBox! Never used it until a few weeks ago when I was trying out the latest DDR Ultramix. I'm almost tempted to go out and buy one just cause I like the songs on that DDR better, but for now I'll stick with Playstation since I also have Pump It Up there smile.gif

^ stellarnina can provide a far better answer than me, but I'll just reply based on what little I know about Dubai:

I've met four people from Dubai. Three of them were Hindus from India, and the fourth was a Muslim Arab-American who was born and raised in the United States. I've been told that Dubai is very clean and modern, yet still has a distinctly Third-World cultural character - sort of like Singapore, or any other successful city-state that became rapidly developed in the latter half of the 20th century. The overwhelming majority of the residents of Dubai are foreigners, and a majority of these foreigners are non-Arabs. English is the common language. (The Arab-American guy was a tutor to the sheikh's nephews. They all spoke flawless CNN/BBC English.)

stellarnina: Your flat is beautiful. Does your employer arrange your housing for you? I know that it's not polite for me to indirectly ask you how much you pay in rent, but I'm curious: How expensive is your flat in Dubai compared to similar-quality housing in a different city (Manila, Bangkok, New York, any other city where you've paid rent)?

I got the Region Free DVD Player off Amazon. Its an Oppo Up-Converting DVD player to enhance the quality of regular DVDs to play on HDTVs. It was about $150 and it doesnt come region free, but it's an easy crack. You type in like 5 #s on the remote and it changes to region 0 (ALL). lol

if you're looking for a normal region free dvd player, Yesasia carries them.

DDR on the 360 is supposed to be good, and you can download new songs as they come out. But i've never been good at DDR. LOL

wow you guys have nice setups. i want a flat screen tv... you'll laugh when you see mine; it's ancient and small smile.gif but the only time i turn on the tv is to watch survivor, so i guess it's ok

i doubt anyone will be able to answer this, but i'm looking for a cheap low-maintenance floor plant. almost every potted plant i buy ends up dying, but i want something green that survives in dimmer light. can you recommend... names of plants?

aloe vera is low maintenance and useful too haha... i think it also looks better than a normal cactus... but it may not be pretty enough.

how about a jade plant? supposedly it's easy, though it may need more light than what you're looking for... grape ivy requires little water, low sunlight... more indoor plants...

Have you tried growing a Kentia palm (Howea fosteriana)? One of my old housemates had one, and it grew well even though I live in the foggy part of the city.

i know jade plants... they're pretty... but i always want to squeeze the leaves. like... succulent plants? my mom had a fat little aloe plant and i'd just get the worst temptation to snap all the leaves in half.

i think i had a kentia palm once... or maybe it wasn't a kentia palm, but it was some kind of palm and it was quite low-maintenance. it just didn't do well the one year i kept it in a really dark room.

i think i'm going to hold off on plant buying for a bit. i'm likely moving out in a month so if that's the case i'll wait. thanks for suggestions smile.gif

melkimx: If it was a low maintenance plant you are looking for, what about a nearly NO maintenance plant?
I'm talking about decorative silk plants. smile.gif

Of course you still have to be careful with these kinds of plants too. Silk plants can die as well if you fail to pretend to water them.

Or if you actually do water them.
There is someone in my family...not it wasn't me tongue.gif who messed up her false floor plant by watering it unnecessarily. She had mixed it in with some real ones and then forgotten until she noticed the leaves got all droopy and stuff from being watered.

So melkimx, either go for fake ones or real plants but not both

wow~ u guys have gorgeous apartments. moving up from houston to Austin Texas... should be rather interesting~ ^^ The rent's semi-cheap and super close to my school. The whole apt area is full of college students... which is good so no worries if we throw parties.. cause somewhere in the apt complex, a party is being thrown. 2 huge pools nearby + the gym. The apt comes furnished w/ full sized bed, chest of drawers, dining tbl and chairs... and a built in desk. I can't wait till I move on out~ ^^
