Another Art Major Thread

Last time I checked my GPA, which was at the end of junior year, it was at 2.8.
Now, my courses/grades are:
English: C
American Government: B
Pre-Calc: D
Photography: D (I turned in late work because I was absent a few times)
AP art: A
PE: A
If I bring all of my grades up this next marking period, will I get accepted to the college I want to go to?
My SAT's were very bad too. I took it 3 times but the score got worse each time. This is my final score. I cannot take anymore.
Math: 520
Verbal: 490
Writing: 540
what are my chances of getting into Parsons, Pratt, RISD, Otis, FIT, and SAIC?

Thank you for all of the replies. I found them ALL very helpful.
As of right now, my grades are all brought up. STRAIGHT A'S BABY!
I just need to keep them up for the rest of the 1st semester. Wish me luck!

each school has different criteria..
like parsons and risd like good grades. i have a lot of people in my class who can't draw for crap but they have awesome grades. However if you have a strong portfolio then your chances are good. Good art comes before grades at any art school. These schools both have home tests which are a pain and take forever so if you didn't start on that DO IT. trust me... haha
if pratt accepted u at portfolio day juss apply online. their fashion majors fill up fast so do it quick. you juss have to give them ur info and write an essay on why you wanna go there. They only have a strong architecture program.. so if u wanna do fashion or industrial i say go to Parsons for Fashion and RISD for industrial.
umm FIT. hahaha where to start. Parsons is better lets juss say that :]
FIT is A LOT.. i mean a WHOLE LOT cheaper. parsons students sometimes go do summer classes at FIT to save money haha
SAIC from what i know isn't that big on grades. one of my friends goes there and she didn't get good grades at all in highschool.. or freshman year or college as a matter of fact haha shh..
Otis im not sure. i know someone in my class knows a girl that goes there for car design. i think shes an international student.
haha if u need to know ne thing further about Parsons so yeah ask away..

In the end your grades, ACT or SAT, class ranking, and your essay will all play a big role - they all get compile into one big thing that will determine your acceptence into the college. It also depends on how selective the college is too. I didn't do so good in 2nd semester of my junior year but I got into a pretty selective college with a pursue major in Graphic Design (I'm in my 2nd year now). You could try to explain about having p/t job or some kind of obstacle in your college essays. The process of applying to college was frustrating and stressful. But it was worth it. Just stay positive and apply to as many colleges as you can.
Besides your 1st semester grades during senior year is way better than mine. I only got one A.

But if you have a strong portfolio, you can always make up a story for your bad grades?
Say like you had family issues that term or something.
Just don't let them think that you are a slacker, and won't be able to handle their academy classes.

My cousin, who was accepted into RISD and MICA (< attending) had a 4.0 GPA and a 2100 on her SATs; plus her portfolio is amazing. I had a 3.4 GPA and the average score on the SATs.
For Pratt, FIT, RISD, and I'm sure for a select number of schools, grades count. SATs are not emphasized as much, but it's recommended that you score a decent score. Do a lot of extracurriculars, and just manage to bring your GPA to at least a 3.0.
If you have any more questions, just send me a PM, I'll be glad to help you ~

That's not true.
A lot of Parsons professors teach at FIT. A lot of us basically receive the same education as the kids in Parsons for a cheaper price. We have a high-quality education as well.
Eh .. Parsons and FIT have a beef against each other. I love my school.

dont know what i got on SAT though. it wasn't that great.
and honestly if i were you i would check out pratt before you attend.
i "hated-hated" the campus. so dead.
but maybe the education itself would be ok?

The problem is, I'm one of those asians who aren't smart. But I have a lot of extracurriculars and my essay is pretty good.
ahahahhaha that makes me laugh
i know a lot of asians that arent smart... but that goes to every race not just asians
im didnt have good gpa either but im going to an art school so you're probably fine
i think my gpa must have been around 3.0
FIT is a COMMUNITY COLLEGE!!!!!!!! so they are government funded therefore A LOT cheaper than private schools and they will practically accept anyone with a portfolio
this is not to say they are a bad school
and i seriously doubt any extra curricular activities help in an art school unless they are art based activities
so dont waste your time in a library or museum
after you apply you should definitely go check out the school in person
remember that most of school in NY do not have a campus... they are just buildings spread thru out nyc
only columbia and nyc have campus i think

i dunno but that those D`s will look pretty bad....
i had 3.7 weighted gpa and i barely scraped into uc davis T_T
I think it depends on the person.
I had a 3.5 GPA and an out-of-stater and I got into Davis.
I think it really depends on the school.
Because some schools look into the portfolio more than grades.
But overall, your grades and portfolio should be good.

i totally feel ya...
but it looks like u hav more than a challenge in academic area.
don't take this the wrong way, but as far as i know,
a lot of 'okay' art skools are pretty loose about the GPA and SAT and all that.
just don't shoot for top-elite art skools. They're usually very expensive and arduous.
i say it's not worth it. it's up to YOU to make difference and ur skills and passion that decides
whether u would success or not.
i think art would be a realli nice major for u and if u can't "shine" academically,
it's best to push to the art and designing area.
i know it's only a perception that most art students are academic failures, but
it also means that art major gives 'not-so-smart' ppl a chance...
like me.
i just like to tell u, 'don't sweat so much' about tryin to get in to elite art skools that
demands high quality academic record. there are tons of art skools out there that can give u
just as nice education. Otis, according to collegeboard, is pretty easy to get in i think.
can't wait for san francisco portfolio day!
