MBC, 연말가요시상식 쇼로 대체.."모든 상 없애"

[머니투데이 스타뉴스 유순호 기자] 지난해 '10대가수 가요제'를 전격 폐지했던 MBC가 올해는 시상식의 성격을 완전 배제한 가요쇼를 준비한다.
최근 세븐 비 이효리 등 톱스타들이 연말 청澯?참석 거부 의사를 나타냄에 따라 방송사들도 연말 시상식 실시 여부를 고민하고 있는 상황이다.

MBC는 오는 12월31일 한 해를 마무리하는 의미의 가수들의 축제 형식의 가요쇼 '라이브 텐 플러스'(가제)를 기획하고 있다. 한 해를 빛낸 최고의 뮤지션 10팀이 참석해 라이브 무대를 꾸미는 행사로 임진각 평화의 동산에서 열릴 예정이다.

MBC 최영근 예능국장은 "지난해에도 10대가수 가요제를 폐지하고 1명의 가수에게만 상을 줌으로써 시상식의 성격을 최소화했듯이 올해는 모든 상을 없애기로 했다"고 말했다.

최 국장은 "너무 많은 가요 시상식이 생겨나 시대적으로 그 의미를 잃어버렸다. 이미 지난해 연말 가요대제전을 끝낸 후 올해부터는 시상식을 없애야겠다고 내부적으로 논의를 했다"고 덧붙였다.

이같은 시상식의 성격을 배제한 특별쇼를 마련함으로써 오히려 톱스타들의 출연은 가능할 것이라는 전망도 나오고 있다.

한편 MBC는 지난해 10대가수로 선정된 가수들의 잇단 불참 통보로 인해 '10대 가수 가요제'를 '가요대제전'으로 전격 교체한 바 있다.

Just a brief translation

Following YG's announcement that all of YG's singers including se7en, as well as other top singers such as bi, lee hyori etc who have stated that they will not be attending the gayo awards this year, tv stations are in a distraught state at the moment.

MBC announced today (11/14/2006) that following the abolishment of the 10 Dae gasoo awards last year, after some meetings, they have decided to totally rid of the awards altogether. In place of the awards, MBC will be holding on the 31st of december a gayo show called "Live 10 Plus" which will feature the live performances of the most shining 10 groups/gasoos of this year

A representative from MBC said that there are too many award shows now and they have lost their meaning. After last year's award show finished, there has been discussion that they should get rid of the award show altgother internally (inside MBC)

I kinda saw it coming when YG announced this because YG and MBC are so close and if YG is boycotting all award shows, MBC most likely won't be having award shows.

Kinda sucks, even if those awards are full of loopholes and scams these days. Still something to look forward to at the end of the year. I guess now we can watch top 10 perform I guess. Would artists even attend that?!

I was looking forward to the MBC award show every year - it is the longest running year end award show, and in my opinion, it produces the fairest results. I even modeled the soompi gayo award show like MBC's.

Is he referring to his artists or other korean artists as well? I think that's a lil offensive since there were many good artists out there right now and their songs are really worth listening too..Like See Ya, Eru, Sung Si Kyung, DBSG, SG Wannabe, and so on..

Just hope that after this YG artists won't get boycotted by other tv stations..

Oh and I have a question to ask... Why does it seem that there are less YG artists on popular variety shows?

He's right on that aspect because aside from artists like SG Wannabe, Shinhwa, Lee SooYoung, and DBSK this year, no one else seems to be selling well. Even Shinhwa and DBSK aren't doing well when you compare their sales figure for their last albums to their current albums now.

YG artists have been boycotted by a particular station in the past but that's already done and dealt with. I doubt any station will boycott YG artists now, especially with Se7en making inroads into the American market and new group Big Bang gaining a lot of attention.

The reason why YG artists aren't on a lot of any gameshows is because YG prides itself on the fact that their artists don't need to go on gameshows and nonmusic related shows to promote their albums. I guess, it's their way of saying "our music will speak for itself". It's a respectable stance.
If you're deprived of YG goodness in variety shows, then you're in luck. Big Bang's TOP will be appearing on gameshows soon, according to an announcement by YG.


I think you're reading YG's statement wrong; you think that he's dissing the music that was put out this year. He's just referring to album sales, not the quality of the music. Although some of the artists you listed, I'm a fan of theirs and in my personal opinion, their recent releases are more than lacking in quality and effort.

I agree with you on everything except the part when you said their recent releases are lacking in quality and effort...

On the contrary, I felt that this year 2006 had more quality music when being compared to last year, I see most artists really rising up to the occasion and I think every artist no matter popular or not do maximize their efforts when it comes to releasing albums..After all, to produce a quality music which would be accepted by all hence increasing their sales is not an easy task..

That's too bad. I don't agree with them cancelling it partly dueto sales because that's not the artists' fault. It's the people's fault! Someone create an anti-piracy plan to increase sales! Maybe if the industry starts to crumble, people in Korea will wise up and start buying.

or maybe it's the other way around. it just happened that YG released their announcement ahead of MBC. for all we know MBC had advised YG beforehand about their decision. i'm just guessing.

I believe the solution to that is to stop putting out album after album. Se7en 3rd was release in March of this Year and here we are with his 4rd. It's starting to be a bit much.

I think it's their own fault for the decline of record sales. Nowadays you buy a cd and you're lucky if you have maybe 1 or 2 good songs on it that will make an impact on any kind of chart and then a bunch of mediocre stuff (if you're lucky). Essentially following the american model of forcing people to buy a cd for only a couple good songs. Also this brings in to play the legal mp3 downloads as a factor where people will only buy the few songs that they think are good off each cd. Frankly, I'd be interested in individual song sales via internet stores as a stat. I like to call this the overall watering down of the korean music industry. If they want to produce more CD sales then put more quality music in each cd.
