I'm currently in 10th grade and have been thinking about studying in France or Quebec for my 11th year. Is that a smart thing to do? My parents are hesitant about it since grade 11 is very important (concerning university). However, there is a very beneficial side to it; French. Since I live in Canada (w/ its two official languages) I figure that being fluent in both will help me in the long run... Am I wrong?

As well, I was just wondering, how do you get into a student exchange program, and how much does it cost on average (per school year)?

Every university has an Overseas Study department or counselor, you should contact them because they'll have the list of programs and the costs. Studying abroad is a good decision, it puts you ahead of those who don't

I went to China in a foreign exhange program, 2-3 months, I have no clue why did i chose to be in this program, I just wanted to go out and see the world. I don't even speak mando or canto, there was a major language barrier, but this only cause more exciting events, becuase I was foreign the kids greeted me with so much welcome, during that time they ask me a lots of question about my culture, when I attend their classes for example math...everything was in chinese of course the number wasn't, i just plainly sit there and stare, my host family speak english, I spent most of my time teaching other about my culture while learning theirs, it is a life changing experince, if I didn't go, I would be so lost in life. Lol, I was so special, that i spent my chinese class in a grade 1 enviroment learning the basic, I was the only 16 year old at the moment the rest was like 8. Boy did i had fun.

If you want to partcipate in a foriegn exhange program, talk to you're advisor or counsellor. i HIGHLY recommend you in going!!!

AFS is probably the most popular foreign exchange program that i know of. many friends of mine went abroad...

anyways. i agree, it looks really good on college applications that you went abroad. but at the same time when you're going to be over there you won't be able to take the classes here and so you'll have to make up credits. so when ur a 12th grader you're going to have to take 11th grade classes as well (my friends are doing that........).

of course, you can go for the whole year. or half a year.....a semester, or even during the summer. i dont think the summer idea is bad really....i really wanted to go to japan or china but of course, my parents didn't let me sleep.gif

i actually want to study in korea, and when i met with my guidance counselor in high school for the first time, she told me that it's a wonderful idea to study abroad.

talked to parents. they said "don't say useless things like that! just focus on working hard right now over here!"

-__________-;; i tried to tell them the benefits of this and i think they think that i want to go because "OMG IS THAT SE7EN OVER THERE?!?!?!!? *screeeammmmmm*" but that actually isn't a major reason at all. actually, it isn't even a reason.

since korea's school year is different from the U.S., i would go during the 2nd semester of my sophomore year to the 1st semester of my junior year, but i'm not sure. a lot of people told me that those are the most important years in high school D; and i'm not sure how i'm going to cope with living in a totally different atmosphere...and a lot of my friends from korea say that the korean school system is harder than the U.S. in their opinion...and i don't exactly want to flunk every class there. it woud be meaningless lol.

i'm trying to convince my parents, raise the money, and go (:
