American Rap Vs. Asian Rap? how would you define them?

With the exception of a few select groups/artists, I also don't care much for Asian rap. Don't tell me that I should try listening to any rap groups from YG either, cause I'll only laugh at you. I did try to get into it, and it was just a waste of time.
These new "rap" groups are parallels to alcohol and smoking. They're both popular, but it doesn't mean that they're good for you.

I disagree. Sooooooo many rap songs in Korea are like...love songs. Basically...the same crap being said in a ballad but 10x faster. There ARE some good Korean rap artists just like there ARE some good American rap artists. If you listen to the mainstream stuff of each country, it's going to blow in comparison to the less-widely known stuff.
Anyway, I favor American hip-hop because I know where it's coming from--it's history in the community and such. A lot of Korean rap seems to be like a fun, poppy trend and doesn't have as much to do about the history of blacks living in America/Canada.

Yeah I agree with this so much . To me , the mainstream Korean rap is too poppy for me and its the same thing over and over again ( ex.. Big Bang).

I think Asians are just not meant for rapping.
.....probably coz they're voices aren't manly enough therefore when they rap they're putting on a voice trying to sound "Black".
.....When someone like Jay Chou raps, I don't feel that annoyed because hes still rapping in his same voice but when someone like TOP raps it really annoys me coz hes trying to sound black and stuff.
Sorry to all those Big Bang fans if I offended anyone.
It's just my opinion.

I agree with your first statement, but not your second.
Performing a certain style of music shouldn't be dependent on what race the person is. Saying that Asians aren't meant for rapping and that their voices aren't manly enough is an insult. It's disregarding female rappers and other rappers who may not have low voices. As long as the person can write their own raps well, and perform it well then it doesn't matter how low their voice is or what race they are. There are Hispanics that rap well too, and one of the Asian American rappers that I haven't seen mentioned yet are Mike Shinoda (Fort Minor) and Southstar (Smilez and Southstar). It shouldn't be thought of as, "Hey, it's an Asian that can rap," but rather, "It's a rapper who is Asian."
As for TOP, that is what happens when someone tries to emulate a something that they don't fully understand. BB fans, mind you that I said "emulate" not "imitate."

Those who think that Big Bang are great rappers, trust me they have a heck of a long way to go. Right now, in mainstream kpop, Epik High is the best (in terms of lyrics and rapping ability). Their lyrics have meaning to them. In Jpop, I advise you to look more underground at the urban artists.

I don't think you shouldn't be able to do rap just because you come from a certain culture. I mean if you love the music, then go for it. You don't have to come from any special sort of backround to like a style of music or be good at doing it. If an 80yrold white grandmother in a wheelchair can spit, then let her. Rap came from the black community, that doesn't mean it has to stay there. That's like saying only white kids should listen to classical music because it came from the white community.
------------------------------------------------
Also, if i'm going to be listen to "throwaway pop rap" then i'd much rather listen to korean rap, becuase it tends to be love songs, which I like. I'd much rather listen to say... Ice Cream - Mc Mong, than like Crank That - Soulja Boy. It has a much more positive message, and I like that. I'm sure there are american rappers with positive messages as well, they're just not as in the mainstream and harder to find.
To finish the post i'll post my current favorite rap song right now
http://youtube.com/watch?v=MiA0NV7Q9FY
He might not be the best rapper in the world, but he's decent, and the song makes me smile. And in the end of the day that's whats important about music right? That it makes you FEEL.

Edit - On 2nd thought, i was simply saying the same is true for alot of american rappers in relation to exaggerations and fabrications of image and suggestive lyrics, So i just pointed out one example that i still find to be pretty hilarious.

Lupe - Dumb It Down / Though he's so newnew, it's mindblowing to me. Play with that flow Lupe!
Mos Talib & Common - Respiration
Pac - Keep Ya Head Up
Lauryn Hill - Doo Wop
Common & Lauryn Hill - Retrospect For Life / Makes me cry every single time
Big - Juicy
Slick Rick - Children's Story
Em - Lose Yourself
KRS one & Marl - Hiphop Lives
Fugees - Nappy Heads
Busta - Gimme Some Mo
Lauryn Hill - Mystery Of Iniquity / UNREAL
Salt n Pepa - Push It
Dead Prez - HipHop
Mos Pharoah & Nate - Oh No
Lauryn Hill - Final Hour / UNREAL
Lauryn Hill - Keep It Tight Freestyle / UNREAL (the best female emcee the game has ever known still)
As I span the cosmos
Mahogany travels at the speed of sound
Span the mainstream but still esteemed underground
My parameters, and wrap up contaminants
Travel twice Earth's diameter, intimidating amateurs
At the Apollo, I played the shepherd sheep followed
Chicks try to model after me like I'm Tyra Banks
Wanna thank me because my statements are prodigious
Styles so prestigious, make a sinner act religious
Street academics, seen alot of girls mimic
But when it's all over you can tell who's the gimmick
L slang-bangs (Slang-bang!) like a dub plate
Jericho Sound System, mash up your club dates!
Sweeter than a cherry on a fruit cocktail
Whenever, Wherever, Whatever
Like Maxwell
My pentium, makes more chips than Intel
I didn't mean to turn you on
Like Sherell!
Kids move they body like they're tripping off of acid, Anthony
Not even fantasy can surpass it
Once you blast it one starts to feel kinky
I think thee, goes by the name of Young Slinky
And just when you thought it was safe to relax
L-Boogie spits with perfect syntax!
Then, DJ Skribble make you dribble on the wax
DJ Skribble make you dribble on the wax!
Let's hear your favourite flop bring it like that. I still don't understand how asian rap is more groundbreaking or better than american rap. The diversity in flow, knowledge or swagger america brings to the table cannot be compared. Please. Is there really a better hiphop swagger outside of america? Make me believe you.

asian rap is kind of imitation/wannabe-ish if you know what I mean.
no offense to anyone who like asian rap though.
I love big bang and epik high myself, and I think epik high is better rap
than almost all the trash put out in southeast asia
and even better than some of the stuff in america
(their english songs, at least- I don't know about korean).
but when it comes right down to it, I'll take american over asian.
i kinda quit soompi. if you see me posting it's in a moment of weakness and extreme boredom.

i would have to say i do like both.
but i tend to listen to more korean rap.
i guess it's because most of the artist here, in the US, that rap,,
they rap about sex and other very dirty and inapproiate things of that nature and it just discusts me.
not saying that all the american artists do that and i'm not saying that korean artist don't rap about that kind of stuff
but it's just that the korean rapping lyrics hasn't gotten to the point where every word was 'suppose to be' the F word and all gross.
i do like the beat from the US better though xD
and i just think, although a lot of music trends and beat are produced here.
there are under the scene people like JYP creating beats together with the american producers to make a really really really good song.
as for the TOP thing.
i don't believe it's trying to copy the hiphop artist here.
i mean i know he and other korean hiphop artist admire them
but i mean, TOP's voice is originally that low.
and thats his style.
i mean, i might be similar to the other artists
but yet, it's still his own.
but for the record.
i like tablo and outsider better than twista xD

ygfamily love.

Rebirth of the slick ? Anyone ... If you don't know that song , you shouldn't be posting on this forum , 'coz you know as much about rap as trailer trash folk ! (Jessica Simpson and fmly. )
Rap isnt always about girls , money , sex and bling ....
People COMPLETELY FORGET WHY "rap" was started off in the place ... The prominence it held at one time when people were treated lower than dogs ! It was the voice of an entire minority .... nowadays its just CRAP !

your ignorant. how do they try be all "gangsta"? Maybe you've never heard of Drunken Tiger, Dynamic Duo, Epik High, or Lees sang .. do they murder, rob, or shoot people like how a typical "GANGSTA" would do? Sorry, the way they dress might appeal to you as "GANGSTA" but that does not make them all trying to be "gangstaaa" .. I agree with everyone who said American Rap nowadays is all about hoes, drugs, money and all that. American Rap today is garbage except for a few artists like Nas, Lupe, Jay-Z, etc. Just turn on MTV2 and listen to all the rappers .. most of the rappers are from the South .. a lot of rappers from the South are bad. No joke .. literally BAD. They're destroying hip-hop .. I'm not going to lie. 90's hip-hop was way different. Those were the days ...

The only thing I'm tired of is people continuously associating a genre of music with race and nationality. You can honestly say one does it better than the other, but you have to remember rap doesn't belong to anybody because of where they are from or what they look like. Backwards thinking like that and the NBA would still be all layups and poom poom shorts, understand?
Where your from should not have anything to do with how good you are on a mic, theres plenty of rappers from Korea with more skills than rappers here, and theres plenty of rappers here with more skills than in Korea, give it time and the gap will close and the genre will mature in that area of the world. Just stop saying its some kind of American only thing.

there's something called underground hip hop, look it up. But yes mainstream hip hop is horrible.
